Collected data contribute to our understanding of distribution and habitat needs of freshwater fish and shellfish, and provide the foundation for analysis, development of mapping tools and conservation plans that are critical for managers to conserve and recover at-risk freshwater species.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In this role, you will be part of a small team and will work closely with lead technicians and program biologists while contributing to the field campaign each year. This work will take place in multiple watersheds across the state during spring, summer, and fall. Technicians will assist with collection of high quality, uncontaminated environmental DNA samples, conduct additional, targeted surveys for freshwater fishes and freshwater mussels using standard sampling gears (e.g., electrofishing and snorkeling*, and collect instream habitat data and water quality parameters across several spatial scales.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>*Please note that snorkel duties are NOT currently being performed, but may be assigned during the season<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>What to Expect-<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this\u00a0role, the Technicians will,<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Collect water samples for eDNA following established protocols to ensure high quality, uncontaminated samples. Enter clear and concise data into digital field forms.<\/li>\n<li>Follow established protocols to collect instream habitat data, including, but not limited to, measuring wetted and bankfull width, depth, substrate type, and flow. Enter clear and concise data into digital field forms.<\/li>\n<li>Follow established freshwater mussel survey protocols. Observe, identify, and enumerate freshwater mussels with aqua scope and\/or snorkeling. Enter clear and concise data into digital field forms.<\/li>\n<li>Follow established freshwater fish survey protocols. Capture, identify, and enumerate freshwater fishes using electrofishing gear. Enter clear and concise data into digital field forms.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct special projects and research as requested by supervisor, such as collection of biological samples and data QA\/QC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Working Conditions:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Work Setting, including hazards: <\/strong>Work is performed in a field setting. To access locations, hiking down and up steep slopes (10-15 miles per day) while carrying field gear (up to 30lbs). Work includes long exposure to adverse weather conditions (such as warm temperatures), walking over rough terrain in varying environmental conditions, and camping in remote locations for several consecutive nights.?This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments. Job duties require working long hours in a team setting in dry suits or waders. Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting. The job duties require lifting and moving heavy objects (50 lbs) including sampling gear and other equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule (i.e., hours and days): <\/strong>This position is full-time, working 40 hours per week. The standard work schedule requires flexibility; may be assigned work hours at any time within a 24-hour period. Work shifts are not fixed and may vary based on operational needs. During portions of the field season, employees will be scheduled to work on an 8 on\/6 off work schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travel Requirements: <\/strong>Travel occurs from the office to sampling sites with WDFW vehicles.
