With your experience,<\/strong>\u00a0you will conduct survey and monitoring efforts for greater sage-grouse, Columbian sharp-tailed grouse, Columbia Basin pygmy rabbits, northern leopard frogs, and other Species of Greatest Conservation Need in north-central Washington.<\/p>\n
You are excited to<\/strong>\u00a0assist with reintroduction and recovery efforts for Columbia Basin pygmy rabbits, northern leopard frogs and grouse species.<\/p>\n
WHAT TO EXPECT –<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:<\/p>\n
Conduct surveys for species of greatest conservation need.<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n- \n
- Conduct field surveys in remote areas with 4×4 trucks, binoculars, spotting scopes, GPS units, and mapping software (Arc Pro, ArcOnline, Avenza, OnXHunt).<\/li>\n
- Follow established survey protocols for lek counts and searches for greater sage-grouse and sharp-tailed grouse during spring months.<\/li>\n
- Perform transect surveys for pygmy rabbit burrow systems during late summer and winter.<\/li>\n
- Perform surveys in wetland habitat for northern leopard frogs.<\/li>\n
- Assist with survey efforts for a variety of other species including small mammals, bats, raptors, herpetofauna, and mesocarnivores.<\/li>\n
- Collect biological samples for genetic and disease testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
Assist with recovery and reintroduction efforts for threatened and endangered species.<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n- \n
- Assist with capture, translocation, and reintroduction efforts for pygmy rabbits.<\/li>\n
- Assist with trapping and vaccination of wild pygmy rabbit populations.<\/li>\n
- Monitor extant northern leopard frog populations and conduct frog surveys where occupancy is unknown.<\/li>\n
- Assist with lethal control of American bullfrogs when necessary.<\/li>\n
- Assist with reintroduction efforts for northern leopard frog, including collecting and transporting egg masses for captive breeding and monitoring released frogs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
Administrative\/Data management.<\/strong><\/p>\n
\n- \n
- Attend team meetings, department trainings, and other wildlife program duties that promote the WDFW mission as assigned.<\/li>\n
- Organize and enter field data into mobile data collection apps (Survey123, Field Maps), spreadsheets and databases (Excel, Access) and mapping software (ArcPro).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
Working Conditions:<\/strong><\/p>\n
Work setting:<\/strong> Primarily field-based (approximately 80% of the time) in Eastside Cascades mountain forests and Columbia Basin shrubsteppe habitats, with exposure to temperature and weather extremes ranging from below freezing and snow in winter to temperatures above 90\u00b0F in summer. Work also occurs in wetland habitats with mud, biting insects, and water depths up to 4 feet, and may occasionally include deeper lakes. This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments. Field duties involve heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), hiking or walking up to 10 miles per day, snowshoeing in winter, and bending or stooping. Work is performed both independently (approximately 50% of the time) and with field recovery teams.<\/p>\n
Schedule:<\/strong> Full-time, working 40 hours per week. The standard work schedule is Monday \u2013 Friday, 8:00 AM \u2013 5:00 PM, which includes the potential for occasional evening or weekend work as needed. Schedules may vary based on business needs, time of year, and\/or weather conditions.<\/p>\n
Travel requirements:<\/strong> Short periods of overnight travel are expected for certain surveys and required trainings.<\/p>\n
Customer Interactions:<\/strong> Work often occurs on or near private lands, with potential interaction with landowners and the recreating public. The position also regularly interacts and works with other staff, agency partners, and volunteers.<\/p>\n

Option 1:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n
Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science, and<\/strong> two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.<\/p>\n
And<\/strong><\/p>\n
At least three (3) months of previous experience with field-based wildlife projects or wildlife survey techniques.<\/p>\n
And<\/strong><\/p>\n
Valid driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n
Option 2:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n
Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science, and<\/strong> two (2) years of field experience as an assistant to a biologist or zoologist.<\/p>\n
And<\/strong><\/p>\n
At least three (3) months of previous experience with field-based wildlife projects or wildlife survey techniques.<\/p>\n
And<\/strong><\/p>\n
Valid driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n
Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.<\/p>\n

Six (6) months or more of experience in\/with:<\/p>\n

- Wildlife capture, handling, or surveys.<\/li>\n
- Working in remote field sites, navigating off-trail, and hiking or snowshoeing in a variety of weather conditions.<\/li>\n
- Collecting spatial data with GPS units and mobile devices.<\/li>\n
- GIS software (ArcPro).<\/li>\n
- Working in and around shallow wetlands and kayaking on ponds and lakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
