Everything they do is intended to help sustain forests and grasslands for present and future generations. Why? Because their stewardship work supports nature in sustaining life. This is the purpose that drives the agency’s mission and motivates their work across the agency. It’s been there from the agency’s very beginning, and it still drives them. To advance the mission and serve their purpose, the USDA Forest Service balances the short and long-term needs of people and nature by: working in collaboration with communities and our partners; providing access to resources and experiences that promote economic, ecological, and social vitality; connecting people to the land and one another; and delivering world-class science, technology and land management.

Research Project: Weather is a critical element in wildland fire, driving both fire behavior and smoke dispersion. These are issues for both wildfires and prescribed fires, and the needs for the two types of fires, and the two areas of impact, are very different. While smoke and fire behavior are traditionally studied separately, they are closely related through fire intensity, consumption, buoyancy fluxes, etc. Prescribed fires are intentionally executed to achieve specific goals, and the intent and goals lead to constraints that either don’t exist, or cannot be selected/managed during wildfires.

We are looking for a fellow to engage in research and tool development that addresses atmospheric influences on lower intensity fires, more typical of prescribed fires than wildfires. The area of research is broadly defined, allowing a significant degree of flexibility. It can include, for example:

understanding the relationship between atmospheric model output and on-the-ground weather at the earth’s surface;

measurement techniques for fire behavior, smoke lofting, turbulence, and other in situ properties;

remote sensing of fire behavior using UAS, satellites, or acoustics;

development of educational materials to communicate the state of fire weather science to fuel managers and fire fighters.

Regardless of the specific focus, the research highly recommends the ability to employ the fundamental physics of fluid dynamics to develop novel statistical techniques, analyze satellite and other remote sensing data, implement machine learning algorithms, assess numerical model performance, improve risk assessment tools, and deepen our understanding of fire and smoke as ecological processes.

Learning Objectives: The fellow will collaborate with leading experts in fire meteorology and smoke transport and dispersion. The fellowship provides excellent opportunities to learn about interactions between the planetary boundary layer, complex terrain, and mixing processes involved in smoke and fire. The breadth of techniques and skills used in fire/smoke-atmosphere interactions research guarantees that whatever skills the fellow starts with, there are other skills they will add to their portfolio.
