The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) South Puget Sound Region is seeking a State Lands Forester – Elbe Unit, Natural Resource Specialist 2 (NRS2)<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to join our State Lands forest management team. Our team works under the guidance of applicable laws, rules, regulations, and agency policies, procedures, and guidelines to sustainably manage State forest trust lands for the benefit of current and future citizens of Washington.<\/dd>\n- \n
Duties<\/h2>\n<\/dt>\n

Responsibilities:<\/strong><\/p>\n
- \n
- Timber sale planning and layout to achieve annual volume deliverables following applicable policies, rules, and regulations. This includes performing as lead or supporting forester on harvest unit recon and layout, ensuring operation feasibility, consulting with agency specialists, document preparation and GIS mapping, and interacting with adjacent landowners, DNR recreation staff, tribes, user groups, etc.\u00a0<\/li>\n
- Timber sale contract compliance, including regular sale inspections, ensuring purchasers and operators understand and follow contract requirements, calculating payment security and billing, monitoring and managing safety issues, and dispute resolution.<\/li>\n
- Working with the unit forest manager and silviculture specialists to develop and adapt plantation establishment and improvement prescriptions.\u00a0<\/li>\n
- Voluntary participation in the agency’s Wildland Fire program.\u00a0<\/li>\n
- Following, exemplifying, and encouraging safety guidelines and practices at all times.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n

Qualifications<\/h2>\n<\/dt>\n

Required Qualifications:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

- An Associate\u2019s degree in forest management or related natural resource field AND one year of forestry experience;
OR a combination of equivalent education and\/or experience.<\/li>\n - Knowledge of general forest management theory (timber management planning, silviculture, appraisal techniques, timber sales, contract preparation and administration, forest fire prevention and suppression, logging and forest road construction, reforestation methods, public relations, statistical analysis).<\/li>\n
- Knowledge of basic mensuration, forest biology, and silviculture.<\/li>\n
- Experience with computer applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, ARC-GIS, and ARC-View, with aptitude for learning new software programs.<\/li>\n
- Experience in navigating using maps, aerial photos, a compass, orthophotos, a clinometer, a radio, a laser rangefinder, GPS, and a chain.<\/li>\n
- Experience using GPS and ArcGIS to create maps<\/li>\n

- The position works from an assigned duty station (see above). A majority (70%) of the work is performed in isolated, unimproved natural forestry settings. This position must have the ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions. The individual must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Office work requires the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desks, files, cabinets, computers, telephones, fax machines, copy machines, etc.).<\/li>\n
- Position requires a large majority (70%) of time in the field and traveling between sites in the work unit. Occasional travel out of the work area is required.<\/li>\n
- A valid driver\u2019s license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational\/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and\/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nDesired Qualifications:<\/strong>\n

- Bachelor\u2019s degree in Forestry, which includes coursework in silviculture and mensuration.<\/li>\n
- One year of professional forestry experience.<\/li>\n
- A current WSDA Pesticide Applicator License.<\/li>\n
- Knowledge of Policy for Sustainable Forests, Habitat Conservation Plan, and related agency policies.<\/li>\n
- Experience with inspecting, instructing, and working with camp and contract crews to ensure silvicultural prescriptions are met.<\/li>\n
- Knowledge of Forest Practice Rules and SEPA process.<\/li>\n
- Experience using GPS and ArcGIS products.<\/li>\n
- Experience in young stand establishment and maintenance practices and treatments.<\/li>\n
- Experience with logging and forest road construction equipment.<\/li>\n
