Washington.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Join the Voights Creek Hatchery team and perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties within the hatchery!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is an opportunity to rear anadromous (fish born in freshwater who spend most of their lives in saltwater and return to freshwater to spawn) species of fish.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>What to Expect-<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 will,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Perform Fish Culture:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Calculate and feed fish according to pond populations and weight samples, adjusting feed size and amount as needed.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor fish behavior, health, and egg production.<\/li>\n<li>Administer therapeutics, calculate and administer drugs as prescribed.<\/li>\n<li>Disinfect and count eggs, pick egg loss by hand or using equipment, and incubate eggs for facility programs or shipments.<\/li>\n<li>Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution.<\/li>\n<li>Clean ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.<\/li>\n<li>Identify marked adults, collect tags\/marks for bio sampling, and collect fish tissue and fluid samples.<\/li>\n<li>Load fish for transport using a variety of methods (such as electric fish pump, brail, and crane), monitor fish during transport, navigate route to planting sites using GPS and\/or maps, and liberate fish via trucks, helicopters, and boats.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor water quality parameters using dissolved oxygen meters and chemicals (such as Hach kits) in order to insure a safe rearing environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Record Keeping and Reporting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill out and submit agency forms (such as fish transfer tickets and hatchery invoice forms).<\/li>\n<li>Assist or develop forms\/spreadsheets for more efficient record keeping.<\/li>\n<li>Perform water quality analysis and discharge monitoring reports (DMR) as required by the Department of Ecology to maintain hatchery discharge permits (NPDES).<\/li>\n<li>Create programs to calculate desired growth rates through the yearly rearing cycle (Projection sheets) that monitor fish sizes using samples and feed conversions.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain the purchasing card account and ledger of hatchery expenses, and complete order payment forms for vendor payments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Operation and Maintenance of Facility and Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintain proper water flow and rearing environments.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor and maintain facility support systems (i.e. diesel generators, domestic, alarm panels, and other support systems).<\/li>\n<li>Perform maintenance duties in and around the hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment.<\/li>\n<li>Operate forklifts, tractors, yard maintenance equipment, fish pumps, and common power tools.<\/li>\n<li>Design\/fabricate needed hatchery equipment (such as fish racks, weirs, intakes screens, fish transfer equipment, adult fish gates, etc.) using metal, aluminum, plastic, and wood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Working Conditions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong>\u00a0Work is primarily performed outdoors, about 250 days per year, in all weather conditions. At times, this position will be required to repetitively lift at least 50 lbs. (including bags of fish feed, salt blocks, and salt bags). Use a respirator and other personal protective equipment (PPE) while working with various chemicals used at the facility. This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule:<\/strong>\u00a0Typically, Monday \u2013 Friday, 8:00 A.M. \u2013 5:00 P.M. Hours can vary greatly at different times of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Standby:<\/strong>\u00a0Standby duties\u00a0<strong>are<\/strong>\u00a0currently assigned &#8211; standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day after the regular 8-hour shift. While on standby this position will work ten (10) days and be off four (4) days. Must be able to report to the duty station within 45 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.
