Are you curious about coastal ecosystem climate resilience and excited about getting out into the field? The Aquatics Assessment and Monitoring Team (AAMT) seeks a\u00a0<strong>Scientific Technician 1<\/strong>\u00a0with a strong commitment to helping conduct research that will improve the climate adaptive capacity for communities and their aquatic ecosystems. As the Acidification Nearshore Monitoring Network technician, you will assist with the operation and enhancement of an autonomous sensor network across Washington State. In this position, you will be responsible for conducting fieldwork in nearshore environments in teams of 2-4 people. You will have the opportunity to work with community science volunteers and will be responsible for helping to train volunteers in eelgrass density surveys, autonomous sensor cleaning, and more. You will also assist with lab work, data entry, and gear prep\/maintenance when not in the field.\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>\n<h2>Duties<\/h2>\n<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p><strong>Responsibilities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Works with a crew of staff and volunteers to collect spatially explicit aquatic field data to characterize aquatic habitat, including plant, organism, sediment, and water quality data.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Collects data while wading, off motorized and hand-powered vessels, from over-water structures, floats, banks, or beaches.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Saves, downloads, and transfers data from field equipment to long-term storage.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Labels and stores samples appropriately for later processing in the laboratory.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Processes samples according to scientific protocols in the laboratory setting.<\/li>\n<li>Under the direction of the Community Climate Resilience Scientist, implements long-term monitoring at ANeMoNe sites in Puget Sound and coastal estuaries.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Mounts and deploys autonomous sensors, maintains deployed sensors, retrieves sensors at predetermined times, operates portable point scientific probes,\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Operates equipment such as trucks, trailers, motorboats, lab ovens, pumps, desiccators, and sieve shakers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Transports equipment to and from the field.<\/li>\n<li>Under the direction of the Climate Resilience Scientist, synthesize historical data, including continuously logged environmental data, biological survey data, and digitally transformed underwater video data to assess species density and distribution according to established protocol, and recommend changes\/amendments to protocol as necessary.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Create geographically explicit maps and analyses.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Implement a protocol for analysis of long-term eelgrass ecological data collection to determine eelgrass density and distribution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>\n<h2>Qualifications<\/h2>\n<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p><strong>Required Qualifications:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 year of high school science or equivalent.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of scientific methods and data collection.<\/li>\n<li>Willingness and physical capability for field data collection.<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to learn and implement laboratory protocols.<\/li>\n<li>Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.<\/li>\n<li>Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.<\/li>\n<li>DNR Core Competencies:\n<ul>\n<li>Personal Accountability<\/li>\n<li>Value Others<\/li>\n<li>Compassionate Communication<\/li>\n<li>Inspire Others<\/li>\n<li>Commitment to Excellence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Working Setting: Remote field sites, including aquatic sites across the Puget Sound.
