Permanent<strong><br \/>WDFW Program-\u00a0<\/strong>Fish<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Program<strong><br \/>Duty Station-<\/strong>\u00a0Olympia, Washington \u2013 Thurston County<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about being a member of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/about\/jobs\"><strong>Team WDFW<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n<br \/><img class=\"fr-fic fr-dii\" src=\"https:\/\/secure.neogov.com\/images\/AgencyImages\/jobposting\/1924\/jobpostings\/image\/Spawning%20Survey;%20Catherine%20Morello%20WDFW.jpg\" alt=\"Salmonid Trap Operator - Fish and Wildlife Biologist 2 - Permanent - *01373-25 description image\" \/><br \/><br \/>\n<p id=\"isPasted\"><em>Photo Caption: Spawning Ground Survey \u2013 Photo Credit: WDFW<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lead the operations of the adult salmonid trap on the Nisqually River, monitoring adult salmon and steelhead populations while collecting critical biological data.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Envision yourself in the field, overseeing the implementation of adult trapping and handling protocols and supervising technicians to ensure efficient data management and reporting.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>What to Expect-<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the\u00a0Salmonid Trap Operator will,\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lead the adult salmon and steelhead trapping operations on the Nisqually River, independently implement predeveloped adult trapping and handling protocols, and supervise staff that operate the adult trap to document annual abundance of salmon and steelhead spawning populations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<br \/>\n<ul>\n<li>Trapping and handling protocol execution.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Participate in trap operations and field data collection.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Provide analysis in final written (agency publications and\/or peer reviewed publications) and oral format to agency staff, managers, and others.<\/li>\n<li>Remain current on the latest peer reviewed publications regarding new methodologies for salmon and steelhead fishery monitoring and trapping methodologies. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Anadromous stock assessment surveys:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assist regional staff with spawning ground surveys for salmon and steelhead to collect biological data used for escapement estimates, population monitoring, run-timing estimates, spatial and temporal distribution, etc. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Independently walk or float long sections of streams and rivers in South Puget Sound to collect biological data from salmon and steelhead, count live\/dead adults, georeference and count redds, and collect other stock assessment data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Working Conditions:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Much of the work associated with this position is conducted in remote locations, on unstable ground or moving water.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Hazards may include the potential for trips and falls, water hazards, and problems associated with operating a moving vehicle, motorboat, raft and pontoons, and riding in helicopters.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Survey long distances independently in streams and rivers on foot, rafts, or pontoon boats for long hours which can result in fatigue. Count and interview anglers at a variety of popular sport fishing boat launch sites and access areas along the rivers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Fieldwork is often done in inclement weather. Contacting anglers requires short hikes to fishing areas or driving to creel locations via state, federal, and county roads, as well as local travel along streams.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Schedule:<\/strong>\u00a0 Position is split between an office working environment (50%) and scheduled field work (50%). Standard work week includes working from 8:00 A.M. \u2013 5:00 P.M., 40 hours per week. There is often a need for a flexible work schedule that includes weekends and may work longer than 8 hours per day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travel Requirements:<\/strong>\u00a0Travel and overnight stay are infrequent but required occasionally.
