The position will remain open until filled.<br \/>\u25cf Email subject line: 2025 Educator<br \/>\u25cf Cover Letter: titled with the following format \u201c2025 Last Name First Name_Cover Letter_Educator\u201d<br \/>\u25cf Resume: titled with the following format \u201c2025 Last Name First Name_Resume_Educator\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ARE YOU:<br \/>\u25cf Passionate about youth education, geology, ecology, and the outdoors?<br \/>\u25cf Excited to work as part of a small team facilitating memorable learning experiences?<br \/>\u25cf Interested in spending a season living and working near the beautiful Mount St. Helens volcano with<br \/>access to hikes with breathtaking views such as the Boundary Trail and Coldwater Lake?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>SUMMARY:<\/p>\n<p>The Mount St. Helens Institute Educators facilitate meaningful experiences for our guests,<br \/>including leading hikes and other educational activities, helping students build condence and a sense of<br \/>belonging in the outdoors, and sharing their enthusiasm for Mount St. Helens with our guests.<br \/>During the school season from April &#8211; June and September &#8211; November we serve elementary to high<br \/>school-aged youth for day and overnight eld trips.<br \/>\u25cf The size of school groups ranges from small groups of 15 people to upwards of 60 people.<br \/>\u25cf MSHI works to maintain the desired ratio of 1:15 for staff\/volunteers to students.<br \/>Summer events hosted by Mount St. Helens Institute (including Family Adventure Camp, Sky &amp; Star Party,<br \/>and Base Camp) are capped at 75 participants.<br \/>\u25cf Our rental programs and summer events serve people of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other programs include GeoGirls (a 5 day overnight summer camp), youth groups, and other camps.<br \/>We host multiple community events including but not limited to seasonal foraging event series with the<br \/>Cowlitz Indian Tribe, summer Family Adventure Camps, summer Sky &amp; Star Party, GeoGirls youth summer<br \/>camp, backcountry running events, and more!<br \/>Educators will work with a small group of individuals under the direction of the Youth Education &amp; Rental<br \/>Programs Manager and with the support of the Youth Education &amp; Rental Programs Coordinator. Because<br \/>we operate in a remote location, we seek applicants who are motivated and self-directed.<br \/>Read about our education programs and our facility, the Mount St. Helens Science &amp; Learning Center<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>RESPONSIBILITIES:<br \/>Implementation: Education Programs, Family Camps &amp; Events (~70% of the time)<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf Meet the MSHI mission to help students &amp; other program participants \u201cSEE\u201d Mount St. Helens<br \/>through \u201cScience, Education &amp; Exploration\u201d during in-person programs.<br \/>\u25cf Collaborate with the education team to plan, prepare for, and implement programs and activities to<br \/>best meet the groups\u2019 goals and needs.<br \/>\u25cf Complete training about the geology &amp; ecology of Mount St. Helens to build foundational knowledge<br \/>for leading educational activities &amp; programs.<br \/>\u25cf Maintain a safe, friendly, and inclusive learning environment for all.<br \/>\u25cf Lead &amp; co-lead place-based geology &amp; ecology activities and interpretive hikes as part of the Mount<br \/>St. Helens Institute curriculum. Read more on our Volcano Outdoor School website.<br \/>\u25cf Serve as a role model for students, campers, and peers: use positive behavior guidance strategies<br \/>and display maturity, responsibility, exibility, enthusiasm, and sound judgment.<br \/>\u25cf Professionally communicate with teachers, group coordinators, and parents during programs.<br \/>\u25cf Promptly and professionally respond to risks, complaints, and injuries according to risk<br \/>management protocols.<br \/>\u25cf Actively and positively contribute to program debrief meetings.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>QUALIFICATIONS:<br \/>\u25cf Demonstrated 1+ year experience teaching and leading outdoor, science-based education programs<br \/>for youth, such as at a camp or education center;<br \/>\u25cf Demonstrate personal and professional commitment to equity, inclusion, and cultural competency;<br \/>\u25cf Knowledge of Leave No Trace practices and environmental awareness;<br \/>\u25cf Working knowledge of place-based natural history focused on geology &amp; ecology;<br \/>\u25cf Excellent communication skills including public speaking, group facilitation, and writing;<br \/>\u25cf Demonstrated computer competency including use of Google Suite, Google Calendar &amp; Gmail, to<br \/>take photos and videos and upload with timeliness, etc.;<br \/>\u25cf Enthusiasm for the mission of the Mount St. Helens Institute;<br \/>\u25cf Be able to work effectively with minimal supervision.<br \/>\u25cf Be willing to be coached and open to feedback;<br \/>\u25cf First aid and CPR (or higher) certication or willingness to obtain before beginning position;<br \/>\u25cf Have a valid driver\u2019s license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years<br \/>We know many candidates do not apply to jobs unless they meet all qualications.
