Founded in 1996, San Juan Safaris provides tours focusing on respectful wildlife viewing, education, and conservation efforts. San Juan Safaris offers whale watch and wildlife tours by motorized vessel February through November.\u00a0Our\u00a0sister company, San Juan Island Outfitters,\u00a0founded 2008,\u00a0offers three- and five-hour professionally guided sea kayak tours,\u00a0overnight kayak-camping excursions,\u00a0in addition to\u00a0whale and wildlife tours via\u00a0motor vessel. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On all tours, an\u00a0emphasis is\u00a0always placed\u00a0on safety, guest service,\u00a0and\u00a0respecting\u00a0the\u00a0environment.\u00a0Our goal is to provide a personal, inspiring and educational experience to each of our guests to foster a sense of connection with the marine ecosystem.\u00a0Our hope is that our guests will return home with lifelong memories\u00a0and a new appreciation for the environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naturalists<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>San Juan Safaris\u00a0&amp; San Juan Outfitters\u00a0upholds high industry standards in professionalism, knowledge, and experience.\u00a0 We strive to be the leaders in our field, and hope to continue to achieve this through our Marine Naturalists.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marine Naturalists are expected to educate, inform, and monitor all passengers during our\u00a03-4 hour\u00a0tours, multiple times a day. Presenting information on whales, most notably our local populations of killer whales,\u00a0as well as other local marine mammals, birds, general ecology, whale watching guidelines, as well as general information on the Pacific Northwest. We aim to provide an immersive experience, not just focusing on whales, but the connectiveness of the Salish Sea ecosystem.\u00a0 Education continues off the water as Naturalists are required to write blog posts detailing their experiences on the water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Onboard Naturalists are also crew! Acting as First Mate, handling lines, working galley serving food and beverages, and monitoring safety on the vessel are all a part of our Naturalists\u2019 primary responsibilities. For this reason, previous boat experience is preferred, but not required. Pre- and post-trip boat cleanings are also an important part of the position. Naturalists should expect to be on their feet, on a dynamic moving platform, for 5-10 hours a day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, this is a customer service position and the successful applicant will be an extraordinary communicator and people person. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major Duties:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. Perform duties as First Mate to Captain, including familiarization with all safety procedures, both solo and in a team dynamic while alternating roles.<\/p>\n<p>2. Educate and inform\u00a0guests\u00a0about\u00a0the Salish Sea. This may include material on\u00a0natural history,\u00a0wildlife,\u00a0general ecology, local human history, the San Juan Islands, environmental threats and changes, and current events. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 On board photography of wildlife, with\u00a0guest\u00a0interactions taking priority.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>4. Clean and prepare vessels pre- and post-trip.\u00a0 Conduct weekly boat scrubs on all vessels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>5. Responsible\u00a0for\u00a0continuing to\u00a0learn new material\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0Salish Sea Marine\u00a0Ecosystem\u00a0with the goal of\u00a0becoming an expert.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>6. Writing daily\u00a0trip reports.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 Food and beverage service in galley as well as stocking galley inventory.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 Availability\u00a0to work as needed in other positions throughout the company. I.e., reservations, food prep, and caf\u00e9.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifications:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. College education preferred. A background in natural sciences including, but not limited to, marine biology, geology, cetaceans, marine mammals, general ecology, outdoor education, and ornithology is preferred.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2. Working knowledge of boats,\u00a0experience working on open water, and ability to effectively work during rough seas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3. Strong public speaking and education skills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0Be able to work as not only a solo naturalist, but as a team member with multiple other naturalists and crew.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>1. Must have current first aid and CPR certification, including AED, Food Handlers\u2019 card and MAST certification\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2.
