OMSI Outdoor Science Instructors are a passionate team of educators and learners committed to providing transformative concept-based outdoor science education experiences. Using our curricula, instructors plan and lead lessons that are student-centered and place-based for all ages. This unique residential position offers the opportunity to live, work, and play across the Pacific Northwest. Work schedule depends on the site and programming needs.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Essential Duties and Responsibilities<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n- Teaches concept-based, natural science curriculum, utilizing a mix of outdoor and classroom settings for students K-12, as well as to adult learners;<\/li>\n
- Leads students on field study hikes that are 3-5 miles in length;<\/li>\n
- Prepares daily lesson plans and cleans\/maintains teaching spaces and supplies;<\/li>\n
- Assists meal service and clean dining hall, cabins, restrooms and staff housing, during and at the end of each program;<\/li>\n
- Recognizes, mitigates, and responds to hazards to ensure a healthy and safe program for all participants;<\/li>\n
- Actively integrates diversity, equity, access and inclusion (DEI) in all areas. Integrates participation, compassion, thought, and informed action to build a supportive learning community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Working Conditions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n- This position is\u00a0exempt, paid day rate;<\/li>\n
- This position is\u00a0special project, full-time\u00a0scheduled to work up to\u00a050<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0hours\/week, depending on programming;\n
\n- Requires on-site living from September to November at one of the camp sites, with shared staff quarters;<\/li>\n
- Typical days are 10-14 hours in length; weekend programming can occasionally make for 13 straight days of work without a full day off. American Camp Association time off standards will be met (2 hours daily, and 24 hours or more off each two-week block).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Physical Demands:\u00a05<\/u>% sitting,\u00a020<\/u>% standing,\u00a045<\/u>% walking,\u00a030%<\/u>\u00a0lifting\/carrying up to\u00a060<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0lbs.:\n
\n- Requires hiking and occasional backpacking for extended periods of time, which includes carrying a backpack of up to 30 lbs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Vision Demands include:\n
\n- Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches of less)<\/li>\n
- Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)<\/li>\n
- Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)<\/li>\n
- Depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships)<\/li>\n
- Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Environmental Demands include:\n
\n- Outdoor weather conditions<\/li>\n
- Steep, uneven, sandy, and\/or rocky terrain<\/li>\n
- Work near moving mechanical parts<\/li>\n
- Work in high, precarious places<\/li>\n
- Toxic or caustic chemicals<\/li>\n
- Risk of electric shock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
- Noise Levels include:\n
\n- Very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test)<\/li>\n
- Quiet (examples: library, private office)<\/li>\n
- Moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)<\/li>\n
- Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Secondary Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\nSecondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:<\/p>\n
\n- Intentionally and thoughtfully incorporates adult participants into the program;<\/li>\n
- Provides logistics and facility support in rotation with peers, and other tasks deemed necessary for successful site and program operation by the manager;<\/li>\n
- Coordinates with others in program planning and implementation;<\/li>\n
- Plans and performs songs and skits at campfires;<\/li>\n
- Provides first aid care to participants and staff when necessary;<\/li>\n
- Drives passenger vans and\/or drives with box trailers with children, for up to four hours at a time, as well as driving participants to field locations throughout programming;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Knowledge and Skills:<\/strong><\/p>\nREQUIREMENTS<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n- Demonstrated ability to pivot between individual and team work;<\/li>\n
- Comfortable leading groups of students in all weather conditions;<\/li>\n
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products;<\/li>\n
- Familiarity with technology systems such as audio\/visual setup and online conferencing;<\/li>\n
- Exercises sound judgment while upholding high integrity and ethical standards;<\/li>\n
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills that adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

PREFERENCES<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n- Strong lesson planning, facilitation, and presentation skills;<\/li>\n
- Proficient or native fluency in a non-English priority language in Oregon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Education & Work Experiences:<\/strong><\/p>\nREQUIREMENTS:<\/em><\/p>\n\n- Combination of experience and education equivalent to Bachelor’s Degree;<\/li>\n
- Working knowledge of the concepts in Natural History and Ecology;<\/li>\n
- Prior classroom enrichment or youth engagement experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

PREFERENCES:<\/em><\/p>\n\n- Degree in STEAM or Education fields;<\/li>\n
- Experience with youth in the outdoors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Additional Requirements\/Preferences; Including Licenses and Certifications:<\/strong><\/p>\nREQUIREMENTS:<\/em><\/p>\n\n- Pre-employment checks, such as criminal background checks, reference checks, and American Camp Association (ACA) background checks;<\/li>\n
- Current Adult & Pediatric First Aid and CPR\/AED certification;<\/li>\n
- Oregon Food Handlers Card\n
\n- If not certified<\/u>, training is available during non-working days at employee’s expense.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
