Depending on the assignment, interns may interact with a wide variety of people including staff, elected officials, community members, or program participants.\u00a0<br \/>Interns will have the opportunity to be part of a high-performing team and take advantage of County training and learning opportunities. It serves as a resource to the County&#8217;s departments and agencies in developing and implementing budgets, strategic plans, financial plans, visual management tools, continuous improvement processes, and performance metrics. It is also responsible for regional planning and implementation of Lean process improvement. This includes\u00a0managing policies and regulations related to\u00a0local comprehensive plan, the countywide planning policies (CPPs), and regional and multicounty planning activities such as through the Puget Sound Regional Council.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>King County\u00a0is undertaking\u00a0the review\u00a0of\u00a0a land use category called\u00a0\u201cUrban Separators.\u201d\u00a0The Urban Separators\u00a0land use designation\u00a0\u2013\u00a0which was created to\u00a0protect Natural Resource Lands (such as farms and forests), the rural area, environmentally sensitive areas, and to create open space and wildlife corridors within and between communities\u00a0\u2013 has\u00a0been addressed in\u00a0a\u00a0variety of\u00a0ways by the 39 jurisdictions in King County\u00a0but\u00a0the results have\u00a0not\u00a0been reviewed\u00a0by the County\u00a0in many years. \u00a0This review is anticipated to take more than a year. The purpose of the internship is to help the County initiate this review through the job duties noted in the subsequent section.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>\n<h2>Job Duties<\/h2>\n<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Mentored by\u00a0a supervisor, the Intern will:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Research how Urban Separators are addressed in the local and countywide planning system in King County.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Research if the CPPs in other counties include similar land use designations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Develop a system to harmonize\u00a0the\u00a0different terminology\u00a0used by the individual jurisdictions\u00a0to describe this designation so that the\u00a0County\u00a0can have\u00a0a fuller understanding of\u00a0this land use category.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Develop a handful of case studies\u00a0from selected cities\u00a0to inform the County\u2019s post-internship work. Developing the case studies will involve research into the selected city\u2019s comprehensive plans and development regulations. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Depending on the skills of the chosen interns, tasks could\u00a0also\u00a0include mapping or data collection.
