The Whatcom Conservation District is launching a new Forest Stewardship Program (Program) that seeks to promote and conserve resilient forests for\u00a0<\/span>multiple benefits and to reduce the risk of forest land conversion by empowering communities and forest landowners to become knowledgeable and successful stewards of forest resources. Program services will be delivered by a Forest Stewardship Specialist who will collaborate with a team of stewardship foresters from seven Puget Sound Conservation Districts (PSCD) to implement the PSCD Caucus Regional Forest Stewardship Program. The Whatcom Conservation District Program will market Program services to small and non-industrial private forest landowners in Whatcom County, and deliver planning and assessment-based technical assistance that identifies forest stewardship priorities and plans and implements forest stewardship practices in partnership with Whatcom County forest landowners and managers. Program priorities include forest and watershed health and resilience, water quality and riparian and fish and wildlife habitat improvement, contiguous areas under active management, in proximity to surface waters, and publicly held open spaces and conservation sites, and profitable working forest lands. The Forest Stewardship Specialist position is funded through 2025, and the individual occupying the position will help build and make the case to secure long-term program funding.<\/span><\/p>\n
