The positions will conduct field surveys of kelp and eelgrass using a variety of methods, including collecting UAS footage and deploying sensors to collect environmental data. \u00a0This position is ideal for an ecologist who wants to monitor kelp and eelgrass in a small workgroup environment, with tasks that span data collection, processing, analyses, and results presentation. This position will challenge you to balance waves and currents on Puget Sound and data management and dissemination in the office. Your diligence in fieldwork preparation and open communication with staff will be critical for smooth and safe field operations and to successfully achieve project objectives. Innovation and creative analysis skills are needed to interpret naturally dynamic data. Strong interpersonal skills will be needed to collaborate with diverse partners. Principle responsibilities include the independent development of defined research projects, field surveys, and analyses relating to kelp and seagrass monitoring. The position also assists with other nearshore vegetation studies and restoration projects in the field and laboratory.<br \/><br \/>The nearshore ecologist position will independently plan, conduct, and report on research projects related to kelp monitoring, using a variety of methods including small watercraft and\/or remote sensing. Tasks will include field-based data collection and sample processing, data management, analysis, and presentation of results. Field-related tasks include the development of schedules and float plans, boat operation, flying a UAS, and scientific equipment management. Office-related project tasks include securing permits for projects, managing environmental instruments using specialized software, and data management\/analysis, including spatial analysis in ArcGIS Pro, statistical analysis in R, and general tasks in MS Office Suite. The positions write reports in agency publications and present results in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific meetings and conferences.<br \/><br \/>The position will assist with research related to eelgrass stressor projects, including the evaluation of seagrass distribution, sediment conditions, and water quality parameters. Field-related tasks include the development of field schedules and float plans, boat operation, scientific equipment management, and oversight of staff. Office-related project tasks include: managing environmental instruments using specialized software, and data management\/analysis, including spatial analysis in ArcGIS Pro, statistical analysis in R, and general tasks in MS Office Suite. This ecologist position will write reports in agency publications and present results in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific meetings and conferences.<br \/><br \/>The position will participate in the field and office on other eelgrass and kelp research projects. The position entails field work and occasional travel for meetings, typically in western Washington. This position requires driving as an essential function.
