Working with interagency partners, DNR embraces an all hands all lands vision. DNR\u2019s fire program serves the communities of Washington and is a \u00a0strong advocate of wildland fire prevention, suppression, and mitigation. Spillman Fire Unit with the SPS Region of the DNR is looking for the right person for its Wildfire and Forest Resilience Specialist position. The Spillman Fire Unit covers Mason and Kitsap Counties of the SPS Region; from the shores of the Puget Sound and Hood Canal to the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. This position will support the agency\u2019s Forest Health and Resilience Plan by supporting wildland fire suppression efforts as a qualified Engine Boss\/Engine Lead during active fire season and supporting fuel mitigation projects throughout the year. In order to meet deliverables set forward by the Forest Health and Resilience plan, this position will conduct hazard risk assessments on residential properties and communities, and plan and assist with Fire Prevention projects. This position will be involved with RX burn implementation support roles. \u00a0Individuals will be expected to provide critical leadership in initial and extended attack fire suppression. Initiates individual fire prevention contacts and assists with the Fire Prevention Plan completion. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Constructs, maintains, and posts fire prevention signs. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Participates in cooperative group fire prevention and preparedness education activities.<\/li>\n<li>Conducts prescribed fire support, forest health treatment, State Uplands support, and issues burn permits.<\/li>\n<li>Works as a wildland firefighting engine leader supervising 2-3 wildland firefighters.<\/li>\n<li>Participates in statewide fire suppression activities. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Protects life, property, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildland and urban interface fires to minimize resource loss and fire costs while ensuring firefighter and public safety.<\/li>\n<li>Maintains all equipment in a state of fire-readiness.<\/li>\n<li>Inspects outdoor burning on department-protected lands, and ensures compliance with smoke management and fire regulations.<\/li>\n<li>Supervises 2-3 exempt firefighter positions in daily activities including training, fire preparedness, suppression, fire regulation enforcement, and burn permit activities.<\/li>\n<li>Develops and implements a daily routine for the engine and crew.<\/li>\n<li>Oversees and participates in the interviewing process for fire staff and makes recommendations on the hiring of new exempt firefighters. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for training, scheduling work projects, reviewing time and activity reports, equipment mileage and maintenance logs, preparing performance evaluations, and recommending disciplinary actions. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for assigning and directing firefighter positions in their work activities.<\/li>\n<li>Assists with instruction of required NWCG 100 and 200 level training, LCES, refresher training, and Operator Safety Training to the public and contractors. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Assists with wildland fire training to federal, state, county, city, and private industry personnel. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Assists with TREX and other prescribed fire-focused training events. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Assists with or leads in-house district training courses as assigned under the direction of the supervisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p><strong>Required Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fully qualified to the NWCG \u201cRed Card\u201d qualification of one or more single resource boss (SRB) qualifications: Heavy Equipment Boss, Firing Boss, Crew Boss, Helicopter Boss, Felling Boss, or Engine Boss.<\/li>\n<li>Experience supervising or leading wildland firefighting personnel.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge and\/or experience of:\n<ul>\n<li>DNR Burn Permit Regulations<\/li>\n<li>Smoke Management<\/li>\n<li>Regulatory Education<\/li>\n<li>Fire Regulatory and Enforcement<\/li>\n<li>Fire Prevention Programs<\/li>\n<li>Fire Investigations<\/li>\n<li>Fire Suppression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Good writing and verbal communication skills<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.<\/li>\n<li>Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and public records retention and requests are followed.<\/li>\n<li>Experience in computer applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Global Positioning Systems.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work with the public, sometimes under stressful conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to act promptly and use good judgment in emergencies.<\/li>\n<li>DNR Core Competencies:\n<ul>\n<li>Personal Accountability<\/li>\n<li>Value Others<\/li>\n<li>Compassionate Communication<\/li>\n<li>Inspire Others<\/li>\n<li>Commitment to Excellence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Must complete and pass IS-700 and ICS-100 courses<\/li>\n<li>Must pass the DNR work capacity test or \u201cPack Test\u201d at the arduous level prior to starting work and annually thereafter<\/li>\n<li>Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.<\/li>\n<li>The fire suppression and prescribed fire work is strenuous outdoor work in all weather conditions. Must be able to traverse uneven and mountainous terrain e.g.: very steep terrain; rocky, loose, or muddy ground surfaces; thick vegetation; down\/standing trees; wet leaves\/grass; varied climates (cold, hot, wet, dry, humid, snow, rain); high altitudes; heights; holes and drop-offs; very rough roads; open bodies of water; isolated\/remote sites. Might need to work in close quarters, with limited\/disrupted sleep.<\/li>\n<li>This position will be assigned an agency vehicle. The position requires significant driving and field visits within a geographically assigned area.<\/li>\n<li>A valid unrestricted driver\u2019s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.
