The Department of Fish and Wildlife has two (2) permanent, full-time Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Research Biologist) openings in our Wildlife Research Program. One position is located in Roseburg, Oregon and the second position is located in Central Point, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>What you will do:<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Assist project staff and contractors in the capture and processing of wildlife:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Assist with capture of wildlife using appropriate techniques.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Assist in the use of immobilization drugs and net guns to capture and relocate animals, tag animals, and collect biological samples.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Assess physical condition and collect biological samples from captured and harvested wildlife e.g., teeth, reproductive tracts, kidneys and udders.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Accurately record appropriate, project-specified data on each animal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Attach marks: radio-collars, visual markers, ear tags, etc. to captured wildlife and check for proper function.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Occasionally use firearms to euthanize injured or dangerous wildlife.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Assist staff in monitoring animal populations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Monitor status of radio-marked animals with radio-telemetry to determine locations, mortality, movements, cause of death, habitat use, etc.\u00a0 Monitoring may occur several times per day and requires using a compass, GPS units, and advanced telemetry receivers to obtain bearings from multiple locations for triangulation.\u00a0 Monitoring may include flying in fixed-wing and helicopter.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Conduct trend surveys to determine wildlife population density estimates.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Coordinate with Department staff (and other agencies) to accomplish wildlife population monitoring.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Record data in the field and in computer files.\u00a0 Summarize and tabulate data.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Collect, verify, maintain, and analyze research data for written reports and publication<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Record data obtained from duties 1 \u2013 2 above and computer enter all data.\u00a0 Verify entered data for accuracy.\u00a0 Maintain data in appropriate (per study design) format or file structure.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Conduct appropriate analysis on collected data (as indicated by supervisor or study design).\u00a0 Writes preliminary reports and assists with manuscript preparation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Collect other data as specified in study plans or as directed by supervisor.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Assist in the development of research proposals.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Working Conditions <\/b><br \/>\u2022 Job requires employee to travel by air, vehicle, ATV, or foot through isolated, rugged and hazardous terrain during all seasons, and under all weather conditions. Workdays may be in excess of 8 hours and work week in excess of 40 hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. This job requires frequent (monthly) schedule flexibility, with work hours often on weekends, after 5:00 PM or before 8:00 AM daily.<br \/>\u00a0\u2022 May require occasional use of a firearm.<\/p>\n<p><b>Criminal Records\/DMV Check<\/b><br \/>Applicants\u00a0are subject to both a\u00a0criminal history and motor vehicles check. <b>Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current <u>certified<\/u> driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. ODFW is not able to support VISA sponsorships.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience: <\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Minimum Qualifications:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor&#8217;s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological\/ecological coursework; <b>OR <\/b><br \/><br \/>\u2022 Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.<\/p>\n<p><b>Requested Skills:<\/b><br \/>\u2022 Working directly with other biologists or stakeholders to coordinate research or monitoring studies.<br \/>\u2022 Designing and implementing wildlife sampling and monitoring activities.<br \/>\u2022 Evaluating biological data and making management and hunting season recommendations.<br \/>\u2022 Speaking in public and making presentations.<br \/>\u2022 Writing progress reports, technical reports, or data summaries.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>Additional Information:<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Your <b>answers to the supplemental questions must be supported by your resume\u2019 or the &#8220;Job History&#8221; (Work Experience) section in your application<\/b> or you may not be considered for this position.
