{"id":50686,"date":"2023-08-30T07:18:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-30T14:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/?p=50686"},"modified":"2023-08-25T13:59:52","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T20:59:52","slug":"postdoc-postdoctoral-researcher-university-of-tennessee-nimbios-knoxville-tn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/postdoc-postdoctoral-researcher-university-of-tennessee-nimbios-knoxville-tn\/","title":{"rendered":"Postdoc: Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Tennessee &#8211; NIMBioS (Knoxville,\u00a0TN)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Job Type:<\/strong> Student \/ postdoc<br><strong>Salary Details:<\/strong> TBD<br><strong>Deadline:<\/strong> Aug 31, 2023<\/p>\n<p>A postdoctoral research associate position is available at the National Institute of Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This position is funded by the US Forest Service and the postdoctoral mentors are Dr. Todd Schroeder (USFS Forest Inventory and Analysis Program&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:todd.schroeder@usda.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">todd.schroeder@usda.gov<\/a>) and Dr. Monica Pape\u015f (Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and NIMBioS&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:mpapes@utk.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mpapes@utk.edu<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The project will focus on the use of point cloud data from USDA NAIP imagery to improve the separation of forest from non-tree vegetation and develop maps of canopy height and sparse forest cover for pinyon-juniper\/oak woodlands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Possible research avenues include combining 3D structure and optical remote sensing data to develop higher resolution canopy height maps and alternative forest\/nonforest maps. The maps generated will be used to improve FIA forest estimates via post-stratification and\/or model-assisted estimation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Ph.D. in a pertinent field (biology, forestry, geography, or remote sensing) at the time of appointment<\/li>\n<li>Research experience in spatial data and forest inventory data analysis<\/li>\n<li>A strong background in spatial analyses in ESRI, QGIS, R, and\/or Google Earth Engine<\/li>\n<li>Experience in scientific publishing; ability to produce drafts of papers for publication in scientific journals; evidence of successful prior publication<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work and communicate with a multidisciplinary and diverse team<\/li>\n<li>Willingness to help with the preparation of additional grant proposals would be a plus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An initial appointment will be for one 18-month period, with the potential for renewal if further proposals are funded and the postdoctoral researcher makes satisfactory progress. A start date of September 25, 2023 is preferred.
