Salary:<\/strong> $65-79,000\u00a0<\/p>\n Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n The\u00a0Researcher, Democracy<\/strong>\u00a0will\u00a0<\/span>staff our\u00a0<\/span>work in\u00a0<\/span>Oregon and Washington\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>thought leader,\u00a0<\/span>policy researcher, writer, communicator,\u00a0<\/span>advocate<\/span>, and coalition participant<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0They\u00a0<\/span>will\u00a0<\/span>develop and deploy\u00a0<\/span>expertise<\/span>\u00a0on electoral\u00a0<\/span>upgrades<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>make the case for\u00a0<\/span>reforms, especially\u00a0<\/span>ranked choice voting<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0along with other\u00a0<\/span>specific reforms at the state\u00a0<\/span>and local<\/span>\u00a0level<\/span>\u00a0that Sightline has identified as promising<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>They\u00a0<\/span>will\u00a0<\/span>implement strategies for using information and communications to help win passage of th<\/span>e<\/span>se<\/span>\u00a0reforms,\u00a0<\/span>typically\u00a0<\/span>in coordination with<\/span>\u00a0cross-partisan\u00a0<\/span>coalitions<\/span>\u00a0of unusual allies<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0To that end, the\u00a0<\/span>researcher\u00a0<\/span>will\u00a0<\/span>develop\u00a0<\/span>a mastery of\u00a0<\/span>Sightline\u2019s democracy-reform\u00a0<\/span>research and contribute to it,\u00a0<\/span>including\u00a0<\/span>systems\u00a0<\/span>such as open primaries and ranked-choice voting<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>proportional representation,\u00a0<\/span>election consolidation,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>democracy vouchers<\/span>. The researcher\u00a0<\/span>will\u00a0<\/span>research and\u00a0<\/span>develop\u00a0<\/span>arguments in support of\u00a0<\/span>these reforms<\/span>;\u00a0<\/span>write<\/span>\u00a0articles<\/span>, talking points, and policy memos;<\/span>\u00a0give presentations<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0advocate for reforms<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0conduct outreach<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0serve as a resource to\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>media;\u00a0<\/span>and lobby public officials.<\/span>\u00a0T<\/span>hey\u00a0<\/span>will cultivate relationships with\u00a0<\/span>leaders and<\/span>\u00a0partners across many types of diversity, including racial, ethnic, economic, geographic, and political.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n The researcher will report to a senior member of the Democracy + Elections team and collaborate with the rest of that six-member team, including staff members in Alaska, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. They will benefit from being part of a high-functioning cadre of other researchers, communicators, and advocates, supported by a well-run administrative and fundraising operation based in Seattle.<\/p>\n Ideal Candidate Skills\/Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n Sightline is a think tank, not a pressure group, so our influence depends on the depth and breadth of our researchers\u2019 expertise and their persuasiveness in presenting analysis and arguments. We aim to draw attention to and build support for data-backed solutions to specific public problems through close engagement in policy debates. And we seek strategic deployment of our skills in the multilayered complexities of political processes, typically as part of creative, even unusual, cross-partisan coalitions. The successful candidate will have a record of effecting influence in at least some of these ways. We are specifically interested in candidates who have:<\/p>\n Flexibility<\/strong><\/p>\n We most likely will hire a candidate who is at the \u201cresearcher\u201d level of skill and experience, as described. However, depending on candidates’ experience and skill level, we will consider hiring for this position at Sightline’s (lower) senior associate level or (higher) senior researcher level. Our staff, contractors, and fellows are in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington and beyond Cascadia as well.<\/p>\n Salary<\/strong><\/p>\n The salary range (for the researcher level) is $65-79,000 (plus 10 percent retirement, as noted below). Candidates at the senior researcher or senior associate levels would be eligible for salary bands above or below this range.
