ARS will deliver cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation\u2019s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture. The vision of the agency is to provide global leadership in agricultural discoveries through scientific excellence.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Research Project<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong>Springhouse Run stream restoration project was completed in May of 2016. The project covers 5 acres and restored a natural stream back to its sloping banks and retaining ponds. This effort has been meant to provide a natural filtration system to a tributary of the Anacostia River. The opportunity allows a mentee to explore and research the development of the project after 7 years and analyze the successes and challenges of this project. The mentee will be asked to assist in developing a long-term management plan for Springhouse Run and a thorough assessment of the Plant Germplasm used in this project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Learning Objectives<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong>The research and training will involve a better understanding and analysis for long term strategies for a stream restoration project at the National Arboretum that has been in the ground for 10 years. The participant will learn native and exotic plant identification, the nuances and challenges in invasive species control, understanding the management of stream restoration with Fauna as well as Flora involved in the equation and a fundamental look at stream hydrology. All of this in a public garden atmosphere where education and signage is critical. It is the hope that after the participant&#8217;s\u00a0research they\u00a0will be able to share their\u00a0findings and experiences in order for us to be able to develop long term strategies for managing this challenging landscape.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of this training, the participant\u00a0will learn\u00a0skills in all of the above but in addition they will\u00a0have a better understanding of the impact of projects when the budget is tight and human resources are limited.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Mentor<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong>The mentor for\u00a0this opportunity is Kevin Conrad (<a href=\"mailto:kevin.conrad@usda.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kevin.conrad@usda.gov<\/a>).
