These positions will assist with recreational crab monitoring activities associated with the coastal crab monitoring project. These roles will also assist in the collection of creel census data needed to make estimates of harvest for recreational crab, and collect biological data designed to evaluate recreational harvest.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With your experience,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you\u00a0will provide outreach and sport fishing regulatory information to the public.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The optimal applicants<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0have knowledge of recreational and commercial crab fishing methods and gear.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You are excited to<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of people to promote cooperative work and information exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>We are seeking candidates<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0who will support the WDFW mission of protecting, restoring, and enhancing fish and wildlife and their habitats, while providing sustainable fish and wildlife-related recreational and commercial opportunities through habitat protection and enhancement activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duties<br \/><\/strong><strong><em>Our Coastal Recreational Crab Sampling Technicians,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Conduct effort surveys and crabber interviews at assigned boat ramps, WDFW access sites, public beaches or on docks to collect effort and harvest estimates.<\/li>\n<li>Observe and count crabbers, empty boat trailers, vehicles and\/or crab pots from land, docks, and\/or aboard vessels.<\/li>\n<li>Collect biological crab data including species, sex, shell hardness, length, and weight.<\/li>\n<li>Always follow appropriate safety practices while conducting field sampling, following established methods.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Record daily catch data using tablets or paper forms.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Syncs data to database at the end of each sampling day.<\/li>\n<li>Performs QA\/QC on their own data.<\/li>\n<li>Assists with entering collected crab effort, harvest, and biological data using established methodologies.<\/li>\n<li>Clean and maintain all equipment and tools to ensure that equipment is available and functions properly when needed.<\/li>\n<li>Drive a state vehicle on freeways, rural roads, and coastal beaches under all weather conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Perform other shellfish related duties.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>The work may require long and odd hours during peak crabbing times.<\/li>\n<li>Safely handle live crab to avoid being pinched.<\/li>\n<li>Work locations include office, dockside, beach, and shipboard, in all types of weather and ocean conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to fully and effectively complete assigned duties and tasks while at sea, especially during rough seas and inclement weather.<\/li>\n<li>Spend long periods of time sitting, standing, bending, and walking along boat ramps, docks, and slippery surfaces. Driving a 4&#215;4 pick-up truck on beaches navigating debris and washouts.<\/li>\n<li>Office-based work will require work at a computer for prolonged periods, as well as utilizing scanners and copiers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schedule:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Monday-Sunday, non-scheduled, 24\/7, 40 hours per week. Typically, 8 to 10 hours per day.<\/li>\n<li>Working weekends, holidays, and occasional long hours required.<\/li>\n<li>Workdays and hours are flexible to meet project needs.<\/li>\n<li>Overtime eligible on approval.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Travel Requirements:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Washington coastal area for field work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tools and Equipment:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Laptop PC, tablet, 4&#215;4 pickup, personal protective wear, cell phone, personal Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPRIB), Personal Floatation Device (PFD), binoculars, and various shellfish and fishery sampling\/monitoring equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Customer Interactions:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Readily interact with the public while working in the field, providing basic information regarding shellfish resources.<\/li>\n<li>Be willing and able to knowledgably describe agency shellfish regulations and management decisions.<\/li>\n<li>Be willing and capable of interacting with unreasonable or possibly angry public while still maintaining personal safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<br \/><\/strong><strong>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: <\/strong>College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science,\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong> two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Or<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science,\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong>\u00a0two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>License:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Valid driver\u2019s license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Training:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Successful completion of agency training and\/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to follow oral and written instructions, have good communication skills, and able to interact with the general public and co-workers.<\/li>\n<li>Work well alone or in small groups is necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Have a flexible work schedule to meet project timelines.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to handle and identify Washington coastal crab species.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of recreational and commercial crab fishing methods and gear.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with fisheries creel methodology.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with using the following computer software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft
