Puget Sound Commercial Salmon Monitoring Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Anticipated Appointment Length: 7.5 months<br \/>\u00a0May 15, 2023 \u2013 December 31, 2023<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Are you interested in being onboard commercial fishing vessels and collecting data valuable for in-season fishery management?\u00a0Join the commercial fishing vessel crew and conduct a variety of onboard sampling, sample processing, and work with data.\u00a0Apply today and start your next adventure with WDFW!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With that in mind,\u00a0<br \/><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Picture yourself\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>using paper and electronic sampling methods to accurately record data on catch, by-catch, and vessel effort data.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With your experience\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>you will collect biological samples such as tissue for gonadosomatic index (GSI), DNA analysis, scales, sex, lengths, otoliths, and possible bird carcasses.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>and will work closely with the boat pilots, biologists, and fishery managers in the Fish Management unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>We are seeking a candidate<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with demonstrated values matching those of WDFW: Accountability, Service, Professionalism, Integrity, Respect, and Empathy (ASPIRE).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duties<br \/><\/strong><strong><em>Our Fishery Observer, \u00a0<br \/><\/em><\/strong><strong>Board fishing vessels and complete onboard fish sampling and data collection:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Interact professionally with commercial fishing crews and captains.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Identify salmon and other marine fish by species and record the marked status of all salmon.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Document soak time, mesh size, compliance with recovery box use, utilize standard detection protocols to detect coded wire tag (CWT) presence\/absence, and the condition of salmon upon release from recovery box.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Observe and record seabird and marine mammal interaction and encounters with fishing gear.<\/li>\n<li>Review and summarize data for mid-day and end of day reporting \u2013 requires maintaining organized and legible records of data collected, observations and biological samples while on-board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other duties as needed by the commercial fishing vessel team:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Participate as Research Vessel deck crew \u2013 includes handling lines, assisting in vessel maintenance, loading gear, assisting in launch\/retrieval, and following vessel operators\u2019 instructions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Exposure to rough seas and inclement weather conditions, cold and hot temperatures on research boats \u2013 some boats do not have bathroom facilities, marine grade portable toilet will be available, or may dock to use shoreside facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Requires sampling on a working commercial fishing vessel, transferring safely from one (1) boat to a fishing vessel while vessels are underway.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schedule:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Intermittent\/On-Call &#8211; 7 days a week &#8211; 12 plus hours per day \u2013 plus additional travel hours as needed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Travel Requirements:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Observers will be required to travel to and from their duty station to the location of the research boat using their personal vehicle \u2013 travel often occurs in the early morning or late evening. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Overnight stays are expected when sampling the fishing fleet in certain areas.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Mileage from duty station to the vessels and hotel stays are reimbursable. Hours over 40 hours per week accrues as compensation time or is paid out each payroll period.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tools and Equipment:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>iPads, thumb counters, Coded Wire Tag (CWT) wands, forceps, isopropyl alcohol, generic office equipment, personal flotation device (PFD), genetic supplies, and other safety equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Customer Interactions:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Interacts with commercial fisherman including vessel captains and crews.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<br \/>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science\u00a0<strong>AND\u00a0<\/strong>two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OR\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science<strong>\u00a0AND<\/strong>\u00a0two (2) years of laboratory of field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Please Note:<\/strong>\u00a0College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>License\/Certifications:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Valid Driver\u2019s License.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>College course work in science or a related field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Experience:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identifying salmon, marine fish, sturgeon, and marine mammals (pinniped).<\/li>\n<li>Fisheries sampling.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>With small boats and being capable of working at sea.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Accurately recording information.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Communicating with the public. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Special Requirements\/Conditions of Employment:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Successful completion of
