If this seems like a great opportunity for you, apply today and start your next adventure with WDFW!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Picture yourself\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>assisting with the handling and sampling of live and dead fish at traps and weirs<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This is an opportunity\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to systematically and biologically sample hatchery broodstock at Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With your experience\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>you will identify<strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>enumerate (count), handle, scan for Coded Wire Tags (CWT) and Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tags, and biologically sample sport caught salmonids.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>We are seeking a candidate<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0who respects and values the opinions of others, creating an inclusive team environment where every member feels they contribute value to the project and WDFW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duties<br \/><\/strong><strong>Conducts sport creel sampling surveys:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Interviews boat and shore anglers by conducting creel surveys in the lower Cowlitz River. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Collects harvest and encounter data of both natural origin (NOR) and hatchery origin (HOR) salmonids caught in fishery \u2013 includes natural origin (NOR) fall Chinook\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Collects survey data using an iPad.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Performs hatchery broodstock biological sampling:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Scans all spawned fish with a Coded Wire Tag (CWT) detection wand and collects scale samples from a proportion of spawned fish.<\/li>\n<li>Enters data into Panasonic Touch Pad. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Assists with sorting, handling, and transporting live fish at traps and weirs:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Sorts, samples, and transports natural origin (NOR) coho and winter steelhead at the North Toutle Fish Collection Facility (TFCF).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Conducts spawning ground and carcass surveys:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Conducts adult salmonid spawning ground stream surveys on the Cowlitz River and its tributaries. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Completes data entry:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Collects field data using electronic devices \u2013 such as an iPad or touchpad.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Approximately 90% fieldwork- includes exposure and long periods of collecting data in inclement weather conditions, handling odorous salmon carcasses, navigating wet slippery ground, walking along streams up to six (6) miles per day, climbing up and down steep and slippery stream banks. \u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Expected to lift (with or without assistance, as needed) large, dead, putrid fish, typically up to 30 pounds daily and repetitively carry loads up to 30 pounds short distances over rough terrain. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schedule:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Typically, Saturday \u2013 Wednesday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours total per week. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Travel Requirements:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Daily travel to and from field locations is required &#8211; little to no overnight travel. \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tools and Equipment:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Basic hand and carpentry tools, gaffs, machetes, winches, pulleys, 4&#215;4 vehicles, boat and motors, Global Positioning Systems (GPS).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Customer Interactions:<\/strong>\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li>Interacts with the public, personnel from other state agencies, and local landowners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<br \/><\/strong><strong>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science<strong>\u00a0AND<\/strong> two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OR<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science<strong>\u00a0AND\u00a0<\/strong>two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Please Note:<\/strong>\u00a0College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Competencies:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic operation of a personal computer.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Ability to do basic functions in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>License\/Certifications:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Valid driver\u2019s license &#8211;
