Non-Permanent<br \/><strong>Department: <\/strong>Dept. of Fish and Wildlife<br \/><strong>Job Number: <\/strong>2023-02498<br \/><strong>Closing: <\/strong>4\/5\/2023 11:59 PM Pacific<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Fish Program<br \/>\u00a0<\/strong>Stevenson, Washington \u2013 Skamania<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>County<br \/><em>Anticipated Appointment Length: 2 Months<br \/><\/em><em>March 20, 2023 \u2013 May 19, 2023<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Do you have a passion to protect and provide recreational and commercial fisheries? \u00a0Do you have experience maintaining and operating rotary screw traps?<\/p>\n<p>In this role, you will monitor the health and diversity of fish populations in the Wind River, and provide information needed to develop sustainable recreational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This is an opportunity<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0collect scales, biological and morphological data from live specimens.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>In this dynamic role,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you will\u00a0assess the population response to the removal of Hemlock Dam.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With your experience<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you will collect mark-recapture data used to develop abundance estimates of juvenile steelhead via screw traps.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You are excited to<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0conduct\u00a0spawning ground surveys and snorkel surveys.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duties<br \/><\/strong><strong><em>Our Wind River Technician,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deploy internal (PIT) tags on juvenile steelhead.<\/li>\n<li>Examine live specimens and collect biological data (scales, lengths).<\/li>\n<li>Use of rigging (cable, clamps) and tools, winches, ropes, and occasionally inflatable boats to place and secure traps in deep, swift water.<\/li>\n<li>Use of provided personal protective equipment (dry suits, PFDs, waders), boats and rope systems to access floating screw traps.<\/li>\n<li>Operate and maintain Shipherd Falls adult ladder trap.<\/li>\n<li>Examine live specimens for existing visual and internal ID marks using visual inspection and electronic scanning equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Deploy internal and external ID tags on adult and juvenile steelhead.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain, backup, download, and edit data from ruggedized tablets used to collect screw trap data.<\/li>\n<li>QA\/QC juvenile data from screw traps in Microsoft Access.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain, backup, download, and edit data from field forms and\/or ruggedized tablet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>85% outdoors, 15% office\/indoors. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor tasks include working in and around deep, swift flowing, cold streams and trap systems consisting of heavy rigging and moving parts. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Weather conditions during this appointment can range from heavy rain\/snow to moderate heat. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Heavy loads and long walks (up to 5 miles) over uneven, slippery, and difficult terrain are the norm.<\/li>\n<li>Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.<\/li>\n<li>Fish traps are often accessed by small inflatable boat or canoe. \u00a0All personal protective equipment (PPE) and training for this task will be provided.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schedule:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Typically, 8:00 am \u2013 5:00 pm, \u2013 Saturday &#8211; Wednesday.<\/li>\n<li>Weekends will be included.<\/li>\n<li>Rotating and variable (night) shifts will occur.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Travel Requirements:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Travel from office to work locations provided by employer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tools and Equipment:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Most field work is accomplished wearing chest waders, dry suits or wet suits, PFDs, and frequently rain gear, all of which will be provided.<\/li>\n<li>Use of basic automotive hand tools, ropes, cabling, winches, etc. occurs frequently.<\/li>\n<li>Specialty equipment is regularly used for capture of fish (traps, seins) anesthesia, tagging, electronic scanning, and storing data.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Customer Interactions:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Frequent, unscheduled interactions with public occur at many field work locations.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<br \/><\/strong><strong>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><br \/>College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field may substitute year for year for experience.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong>\u00a0two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Or<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED including\u00a0<strong>and<\/strong> two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>License:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Valid driver\u2019s license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Training:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Successful completion of agency training and\/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experience working in and around rivers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience wading in streams and swimming in water deeper than 5\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to operate inflatable boats on a flowing river is preferable. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience with installation and operation of rotary screw traps and adult salmonid traps and seines, experience with live handling, PIT tagging, and biological data collection on adult and juvenile steelhead or salmon are preferable.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Experience with Microsoft Access and Excel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: <\/strong>WDFW requires all employees to be fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of employment.
