{"id":48092,"date":"2023-01-22T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-22T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/?p=48092"},"modified":"2023-01-18T16:36:41","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T00:36:41","slug":"job-scientific-technician-2-commercial-fishing-monitoring-technician-dept-of-fish-and-wildlife-olympia-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/job-scientific-technician-2-commercial-fishing-monitoring-technician-dept-of-fish-and-wildlife-olympia-wa\/","title":{"rendered":"Job: Scientific Technician 2 &#8211; Commercial Fishing Monitoring Technician, Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (Olympia, WA)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><!--more--><strong>Salary<\/strong>: $2,957.00 &#8211; $3,915.00 Monthly<br><strong>Location<\/strong>: Thurston County \u2013 Olympia, WA<br><strong>Job Type<\/strong>: Full Time &#8211; Permanent<br><strong>Department<\/strong>: Dept. of Fish and Wildlife<br><strong>Job Number<\/strong>: 2023-00825<br><strong>Closing<\/strong>: 2\/1\/2023 11:59 PM Pacific<br><br><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>FULL-TIME\/PERMANENT<br>&nbsp;COMMERCIAL FISHING MONITORING TECHNICIAN<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Perform research duties relating to the management and monitoring of Puget Sound and coastal Troll commercial fisheries.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Work extensively with WDFW program managers, commercial fishers, commercial buyers, and other WDFW staff to maintain a positive rapport.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This is an opportunity<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;to analyze the commercial regulations (WAC\u2019s) to effectively monitor the compliance of commercial salmon fishers and dealers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With your experience,<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;you will conduct field monitoring of Puget Sound to monitor commercial fishing efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork,<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;corresponding with commercial fishers, commercial buyers, fishery managers, enforcement, and fellow commercial team members.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>We are seeking a candidate<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;who will support the WDFW mission of protecting, restoring, and enhancing fish and wildlife and their habitats, while providing sustainable fish and wildlife-related recreational and commercial opportunities through habitat protection and enhancement activities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Duties<br><\/strong><\/span>Our Commercial Fishing Monitoring Technician will,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Receive, analyze, input, and maintain Puget Sound and Ocean Troll Quick Reported non-treaty and treaty commercial catch data.<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for researching and analyzing received commercial salmon harvest data for accuracy and completeness to derive commercial catch data used in writing daily\/weekly catch estimate reports.<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for performing comparison checks of quick reported data with catch estimate surveys and mailed fish ticket information, which results in a commercial salmon harvest database that is current, complete, and error free.<\/li>\n<li>The Quick reporter analyzes the annual commercial catch data for accuracy for the data to be used in writing annual reports of species catch by commercial salmon management and catch reporting areas.<\/li>\n<li>Log, input, organize, and summarize long-term salmon scale databases from Puget Sound test fisheries, commercial fisheries, and hatcheries, to assessments, and scientific research projects.<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for building and maintaining a positive rapport with key individuals that play a role in the collection of commercial catch data by establishing a constituency that is aware of reporting requirements which leads to an accurate dataset prior to being entered into the agency\u2019s database.<\/li>\n<li>Write daily\/weekly catch estimate reports used during in-season management.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain archived records consisting of Non-Treaty and Treaty catch reports, reconciliations, copies of commercial Fish Receiving Tickets, Enforcement Records and other documents required to be retained according to the Washington State Archive Schedule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:<br><\/strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mainly office setting. Occasional fieldwork.<\/li>\n<li>Hazards: Chemicals, on-board tripping hazards, inclement weather, sharp tools, lifting and carrying (50 lb. max), boat-to-boat transfers, repetitive movements of hands, long periods of sitting\/standing, fish blood and slime, occasional hostility from constituents. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Schedule:<\/strong> 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day, usually Monday through Friday.<br>Fieldwork may involve overtime and\/or weekend hours.<br><strong>Travel Requirements: <\/strong>Minimal travel required.<br><strong>Tools and Equipment: <\/strong>Computer.<br><strong>Customer Interactions:<\/strong> Ongoing interactions with commercial fish buyers, commercial fishers, the public and representatives from other agencies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Qualifications<br><\/strong><\/span>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:<br>College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester hours or nine quarter hours of natural sciences.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED, and two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>-Or-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED and two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>License: <\/strong>Valid driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<br><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proficient in Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.<\/li>\n<li>Have excellent customer service skills and legible handwriting.<\/li>\n<li>Able to work with a wide variety of people and keep a positive attitude.<\/li>\n<li>Basic understanding or knowledge of the basic principles of scientific inquiry, Puget Sound fish and invertebrates and their life history in marine and riverine habitats, field sampling techniques, and general lab procedures.<\/li>\n<li>It is also beneficial to have an attention to detail and the ability to judge when guidance is needed in certain situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: <\/strong>WDFW requires all employees to be fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine as a condition of employment.
