The<\/span> Smithsonian<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> MarineGEO program<\/span> seeks<\/span> a postdoctoral<\/span> scholar<\/span> to advance a new<\/span>
project<\/span> synthesiz<\/span>ing<\/span> scientific evidence on how biodiversity affects marine ecosystem<\/span>
functioning and resilience,<\/span> in support of U.S. marine<\/span> resource<\/span> managers<\/span> and<\/span> decision<\/span>–<\/span>
mak<\/span>ers<\/span>.<\/span> The Postdoc will join<\/span> a<\/span> multidisciplinary leadership team<\/span>, working with PIs Emmett<\/span>
Duffy (Smithsonian),<\/span> Gabrielle Canonico (<\/span>U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing<\/span> System<\/span> and<\/span>
MBON) and Steven Scyphers (University of South Alabama),<\/span> and<\/span> a task force of experts<\/span>
and<\/span> managers<\/span> exploring<\/span> the role of biodiversity in<\/span> U.S.<\/span><\/span> marine social<\/span>–<\/span>ecological systems.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
Research context<\/span>:<\/span> A wealth of evidence<\/span> confirms<\/span> that changing biodiversity can strongly<\/span>
affect the functioning of ecosystems, but these advances<\/span> have<\/span> not widely<\/span> influenced<\/span>
management and conservation. This project will<\/span> conven<\/span>e a<\/span> diverse, collaborative<\/span> team to<\/span>
help<\/span> \u2018operationalize\u2019 the functional roles<\/span> of<\/span> marine<\/span> biodiversity by<\/span> identifying<\/span> key<\/span>
components of biodiversity, resilience, and their interactions that can inform practical<\/span>
decision making in U.S. marine management.<\/span> The work is<\/span> supported by the Lenfest Ocean<\/span>
Program, National Marine Sanctuary Foun<\/span>dation, and<\/span> the Angell Foundation.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Position description:<\/span> The postdoc<\/span> will be a key member of the<\/span> project<\/span> team,<\/span> co<\/span>–<\/span>lead<\/span>ing<\/span>
des<\/span>i<\/span>gn<\/span> of specific project research components<\/span>,<\/span> data analysis<\/span>,<\/span> and interpretation, with the<\/span>
opportunity to lead<\/span> resulting MSs and products<\/span>.<\/span> As such,<\/span><\/span> w<\/span>e welcome applicants from all<\/span>
fields of study focused on marine social<\/span>–<\/span>ecological systems.<\/span> Research activities include<\/span>
data mining,<\/span> data synthesis,<\/span> modelling,<\/span> and<\/span> partic<\/span>ipation in<\/span> stakeholder interviews<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> The<\/span>
postdoc will have opportunities to learn<\/span> skills in a highly integrative social<\/span>–<\/span>ecological milieu,<\/span>
including<\/span> sophisticated<\/span> modeling approaches,<\/span> mind mapping<\/span>,<\/span> stakeholder engagement,<\/span>
