The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST), a citizen science program based at the<\/span>
University of Washington\u2019s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, is looking for<\/span> 3<\/span>–<\/span>4<\/span> undergraduate<\/span>
students<\/span> to assist with da<\/span>ta entry and management;<\/span> particip<\/span>ant<\/span> recruitment, training, and<\/span>
communication;<\/span> and program outreach.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
COASST<\/span> works with approximately<\/span> 10<\/span>00 citizen science<\/span> participant<\/span>s, using their data on<\/span> beach<\/span>–<\/span>cast<\/span>
carcasses of marine birds<\/span> and marine debris<\/span> to establish the baseline, or ‘normal’<\/span> pattern of deposition<\/span>
on<\/span> North Pacific beaches. Baselines<\/span> of seabird mortality<\/span> are crucial for assessing the impacts of oil spills,<\/span>
fisheries, and climate change in the marine environment<\/span>, while marine debris data spe<\/span>aks directly to the<\/span>
source and transport pathways of debris, as well as to the potential harm to people, wildlife, and local<\/span>
coastal ecosystems<\/span><\/span><\/span>
COASST interns work as a team directly with staff and gain valuable, hands<\/span>–<\/span>on experience with citizen<\/span>
science p<\/span>rograms and the complexities of<\/span> this<\/span> unique dataset<\/span>.<\/span> These positions will involve a combination<\/span>
of office<\/span>–<\/span>based tasks,<\/span> occasionally<\/span> requiring travel to coastal data collection sites.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Internship tasks may include:<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Recruiting, tracking, and communicating w<\/span>ith citizen science participants<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Managing incoming data and photos from beach surveys<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Entering beached bird<\/span> and<\/span> marine debris data<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Preparing materials for beached bird and marine debris trainings<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Representing COASST at outreach events<\/span><\/span><\/span>
Opportunities are av<\/span>ailable in Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer quarters, and the internship can count<\/span>
towards college credits<\/span> meeting departmental requirements<\/span>.<\/span> (<\/span>Each credit requires 4 hours of work per<\/span>
