Overview<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
Point Blue Conservation Science<\/span> of Petaluma, CA is seeking applications for a<\/span> full<\/span>–<\/span>time<\/span> seasonal<\/span>
staff biologist in our Farallon Islands Program. P<\/span>oint Blue<\/span> is an independent, scientific resear<\/span>ch non<\/span>–<\/span>
profit wh<\/span>ose mission is to<\/span> conserve birds, other wildlife and ecosystems through science,<\/span>
partnerships, and outreach.<\/span> We have been assessing changes in our environment and advancing<\/span>
conservation through bird and ecosystem studies since our founding<\/span> as Point Reyes B<\/span>ird<\/span>
Observatory in 1965.<\/span> Under co<\/span>–<\/span>operative agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service<\/span>
(USFWS), P<\/span>oint Blue<\/span> has conducted continuous research and stewardship of the unique natural<\/span>
resources of the Farallon<\/span> Islands<\/span> National Wildlife Re<\/span>fuge sin<\/span>ce 1968.<\/span><\/span>
The Fa<\/span>rallon Islands are 30 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and<\/span> just a few<\/span>
miles from the continental shelf in the rich coastal upwelling region of Central California. The<\/span>
islands host globally significant breeding s<\/span>eabird p<\/span>opulations (over<\/span> 3<\/span>5<\/span>0,000 individuals of 13<\/span>
species), are a major haul out and breeding site for 5 species of pinnipeds, and a key feeding site for<\/span>
White Sharks. The islands also host a variety of migrant landbirds<\/span>,<\/span> an<\/span> endemic salamander<\/span>
population<\/span>,<\/span> and unique<\/span> plant and insec<\/span>t communities<\/span>. Most research on the Farallones<\/span> involves<\/span>
continuous<\/span> multi<\/span>–<\/span>decadal<\/span> time series.<\/span><\/span>
The<\/span> Winter<\/span> Farallon Biologist<\/span> position<\/span> runs from mid<\/span>–<\/span>November to<\/span> mid<\/span>–<\/span>April<\/span> including<\/span> 16<\/span> weeks<\/span> of<\/span>
remote<\/span> field time<\/span> per ye<\/span>ar<\/span> living and<\/span> working with a small group of<\/span> research assistants<\/span> and biologists<\/span>
on the Farallon<\/span> Islands<\/span> Na<\/span>tional Wildlife<\/span> Refuge.<\/span> During this<\/span> time,<\/span> they are<\/span> responsible for<\/span> leading<\/span>
our ongoing studies of<\/span> northern elephant seals and other<\/span> Farallon<\/span> wildlife, training re<\/span>search<\/span>
assistants,<\/span> maintai<\/span>ning hi<\/span>gh quality data collection,<\/span> and s<\/span>ummarizing<\/span> and int<\/span>erpreting<\/span> data f<\/span>or reports<\/span>
and publications. A<\/span>dditional<\/span> responsibilities include<\/span> operating a small motorboat in o<\/span>pen<\/span> water<\/span>
conditions,<\/span> maintenance<\/span> of field station equipmen<\/span>t and facilities,<\/span> and<\/span> f<\/span>oster<\/span>ing good<\/span> relationships<\/span>
and<\/span> communication with research and management partners.<\/span> On island a<\/span>ccommodations are in<\/span>
restored lighthouse keeper\u2019s housing, with<\/span> a fully equipped<\/span> modern<\/span> field station to accommodate<\/span>
year<\/span>–<\/span>round occupati<\/span>on by biologists.<\/span> When not in the field, the biologist\u2019s time is<\/span> dedicated to<\/span>
managing,<\/span> analyzing,<\/span> and interpreting data collected in the field as well as preparing reports and<\/span>
publicat<\/span>ions.<\/span> Non field<\/span> time would be based out of P<\/span>oint Blue<\/span>\u2019s Petaluma office<\/span> or work<\/span> from home<\/span>
telecommuting<\/span>.<\/span> This position requires a minimum 3<\/span>–<\/span>year commitment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
