The Discovery Park Environmental Learning Center is\u00a0recruiting for an enthusiastic and engaging\u00a0Summer Nature Day Camp Environmental Educators<\/strong>\u00a0to join their team this summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For over forty years, Discovery Park has offered a nature day camp program to the children of the Puget Sound region. Discovery Park is a 560-acre natural area park operated by Seattle Parks and Recreation. It is the largest city park in Seattle and occupies most of the former Fort Lawton site. Situated on Magnolia Bluff overlooking Puget Sound, Discovery Park offers spectacular view of both the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges. The park includes two miles of protected tidal beaches as well as open meadow lands, sea cliffs, forest groves, active sand dunes, thickets, streams, and ponds. We visit the different areas of the park in order to encourage discovery of the outside world and our place within it. Environmental Educators work individually and as a team.<\/span><\/p>\n

Summer Day Camp Schedule:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • June 27th<\/sup> \u2013 September 2nd<\/sup> <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Monday \u2013 Friday, 25-40 hours per week.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Shifts will be 6 to 8 hours per day starting between 8:00am \u2013 9:00am (subject to change based on business need).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Staff may be asked to work either Nature Play Camp (4yr-6yr) or Nature Adventure Trek (6yr-12yr)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Mandatory pre-camp training and orientation will be offered the week of June 27th <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Pay Rate: $18.17\u00a0per hour<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Basic Duties:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Guiding 8-10 children ages 4-12, in hands-on, environmental education activities<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Working closely with the Environmental Education team to ensure the success of participants <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Create\/adapt curriculum as directed<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Direct games and activities (including songs and art projects) for 8 \u2013 60 campers<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Ensure environments are well-maintained, developmentally appropriate and supports the needs of the program and its participants<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Regularly team-teach with other staff members and 48\u201360 campers<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Provide positive transitions that maintain ratios\/head counts to minimize the risk of unwanted behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Supervise, evaluate, and act as a positive role model for the Jr. Naturalist volunteers, ages 13-16 if applicable<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Ability to work, enjoy self, and campers, and keep high energy while exploring Discovery Park for extended periods of time<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Be flexible, flexible, flexible<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Requirements:\u202f<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • At least 1-year experience working with children, preferably in an outdoor setting;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • One year of college level education, preferably with course work in the natural sciences and\/or education;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Experience supervising and directing children through programming is highly preferred\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Ability to work collaboratively with team members of diverse backgrounds;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • First Aid\/CPR certification or ability to obtain;\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Commitment to work full summer program;\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Maintain positive attitude as a team player;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • If hired, must pass criminal background check;\u00a0must provide proof of eligibility to work in the US and valid government issued ID; sign up for direct deposit with either checking or savings account.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
      • If hired must be vaccinated for Covid-19 and boosted if eligible<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Desired Skills\/Abilities:\u202f<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        • Experience working with a diversity of youth;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest plants, animals, and ecosystems;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Knowledge of child development and teaching methods;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Ability to develop creative lesson plans;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Experience in visual and creative arts;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Enthusiasm and energy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
