POSITION DESCRIPTION:<\/span><\/span><\/strong>
The Monitoring and Restoration Technician (Technician) will work with a team in the monitoring,<\/span>
maintenance and restoration of prairie and other habitats in the South Salish Sea region of Washington,<\/span>
focusing on Joint Base Lewis-McChord. While this position is expected to support several project areas,<\/span>
the Technician will primarily focus on rare butterfly monitoring during the species flight seasons. Other<\/span>
projects this position may support include: upland and\/or aquatic invasive plant control; silviculture<\/span>
spraying and forest invasive plant control; prairie and oak habitat monitoring and mapping; burn unit<\/span>
preparation and post-burn follow-up activities; or prairie habitat restoration. The position entails<\/span>
strenuous physical activity and may include the operation of heavy equipment.<\/span><\/span>
This position requires a sound work ethic, interpersonal skills, and positive attitude during long field<\/span>
days. Development of positive and effective relationships with volunteers and partners is critical. The<\/span>
Technician must also be able to work independently, completing substantial tasks without direct<\/span>
supervision or through the supervision of conservation partners, including federal and state agency<\/span>
personnel, such as the WA Dept. of Natural Resources, WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, and Joint Base<\/span>
Lewis-McChord Fish and Wildlife and Forestry staff. The South Sound Program is science-based and the<\/span>
Technician will be required to document and appropriately file all data pertinent to the operations on a<\/span>
regular basis.<\/span><\/span>
The Technician is expected to be an integral member of our team. The Technician will need to effectively<\/span>
communicate with partners, volunteers and the public concerning specific work and the work of the<\/span>
South Sound Program.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

RESPONSIBILITIES<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Participate in rare butterfly species monitoring during active flight seasons<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Assist with butterfly habitat monitoring, mapping and enhancement.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Survey and control invasive plants and undesirable native vegetation primarily through herbicide<\/span>
applications.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Participate on prescribed ecological burns. Achieve and maintain qualification as Firefighter Type II<\/span>
under NWCG guidelines (Training will be provided). May work towards advanced qualifications.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Conduct routine maintenance of all equipment used in implementing duties.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Operate equipment such as tractor, chain saws, hand-operated gas-powered brush cutters, engine<\/span>
powered chipper\/shredder, and other heavy and light equipment. (training will be provided where<\/span>
needed.)<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Work with personnel, equipment and other resources to successfully complete natural resource<\/span>
management projects.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Learn current best-practice restoration techniques as developed and utilized by the restoration<\/span>
team. Communicate the correct and safe implementation of these techniques to other<\/span>
crewmembers, partners and volunteers.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Work collaboratively with resource agencies, consultants, and other conservation organizations.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Assist with other natural resource management operations as requested including tree planting,<\/span>
monitoring.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Fulfill other duties as assigned.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


REQUIREMENTS:<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Completion of or progress towards BA\/BS\/AS\/Technical or vocational degree in science-related<\/span>
field or at least one year natural resources, agriculture, or other outdoor\/physical related<\/span>
experience.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems; ability to recognize plant and animal<\/span>
species as required to complete natural resource management activities. Knowledge of ecological<\/span>
land management principles.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Must be able to obtain appropriate driver\u2019s license, Washington State pesticide license, first aid,<\/span>
CPR, and NWCG firefighter type II certification.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. backpack<\/span>
sprayer, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc. Training will be provided where needed.)<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Ability to follow instructions from colleagues<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Ability to manage time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers) and<\/span>
familiarity with ArcGIS and other database systems.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

WORKING CONDITIONS<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Regularly works in natural areas. Hikes across, and conducts work within, native habitats<\/span>
and uneven ground. Work is anticipated in prairie, forest, wetland and other habitat<\/span>
types.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Works in military training areas with nearby training activities including artillery and<\/span>
small arms fire, aviation and military vehicle driving training, etc.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Regularly sits or stands at a desk or computer workstation.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Regularly required to operate a ESI vehicle.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Frequently works alone.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> May be requested to work some evenings and weekends, and\/or travel.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Uses or supervises the use of pesticides and or other chemical substances.<\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span> Uses or supervises the use of hand and powered equipment such as shovels, axes, weed<\/span>
trimmers and chain saws.<\/span><\/span>
