POSITION DESCRIPTION:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>
The Habitat Restoration Crew<\/span><\/span> Lead<\/span><\/span><\/span> will lead and mentor the Thurston Conservation District (TCD)<\/span><\/span>
Veteran Conservation Corps Interns<\/span><\/span> as they develop skills in the environmental field.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
This position will supervise a 4<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>person field crew under direction from the TCD habitat team. The<\/span><\/span>
Habitat Restoration Crew<\/span><\/span> Lead<\/span><\/span><\/span> will lead their crew in completing meaningful habitat restoration<\/span><\/span>
projects in<\/span><\/span><\/span> Thurston County to serve their community by improving water quality, enhancing wildlife<\/span><\/span>
habitat, and preventing the spread of invasive weeds. This position will work with their crew full<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>time,<\/span><\/span>
outdoors, on public and private properties such as farms and c<\/span><\/span>onservation lands, to achieve individual,<\/span><\/span>
local and regional resource conservation and restoration goals. Field work activities will include<\/span><\/span>
riparian, wetland, and upland restoration of native trees and shrubs, manual, mechanical and chemical<\/span><\/span>
control of in<\/span><\/span>vasive weeds, implementing erosion control techniques, and participating in a variety of<\/span><\/span>
other aquatic species and salmon recovery projects.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
The ideal candidate for this position will have strong communication skills, demonstrated group<\/span><\/span>
leadership abilitie<\/span><\/span>s, ability to work outdoors in all conditions, and experience with habitat restoration<\/span><\/span>
and enhancement techniques.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Accurately interprets habitat restoration plans, maps and verbal instructions to ensure<\/span><\/span>
complete understa<\/span><\/span>nding of project objectives. This includes participating in regular<\/span><\/span>
coordination meetings, studying project plans, asking questions, and identifying necessary<\/span><\/span>
equipment, sequencing of daily tasks, and potential challenges.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span>Demonstrates and trains crew members in a wide variety of restoration techniques such as<\/span><\/span>
livestake installation, bare root planting, potted stock planting, manual, mechanical and<\/span><\/span>
chemical control of invasive plant species.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span>Manages the completion of projec<\/span><\/span>ts as planned. This includes monitoring the use of materials,<\/span><\/span>
assigning daily work tasks to individual crew members, communicating progress and problem<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>
solving challenges with the TCD habitat team.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Monitors and independently judges changing field work cond<\/span><\/span>itions including extreme weather,<\/span><\/span>
terrain, individual safety, activities, and equipment for any potential safety concerns.<\/span><\/span>
Implements safety procedures in the field and office.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span>Works under tight project deadlines and manages conflicting demands while succ<\/span><\/span>essfully<\/span><\/span>
leading crew members in an ever<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>changing field work environment with minimal direction from<\/span><\/span>
a<\/span><\/span> supervisor<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Performs weekly check<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>in meetings, and quarterly evaluations with each crew member. Gives<\/span><\/span>
clear feedback on past performance and expectations for future performance. Documents<\/span><\/span>
behavior or perfor<\/span><\/span>mance issues and administers any appropriate disciplinary action.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>

Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with all District staff, landowners, project<\/span><\/span>
partners and other members of the public.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

QUALIFICATIONS:<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
An Associate’s degree in Environmental Science or Studies, Forestry, or closely related field, and one<\/span>
(1) year of experience working on a habitat restoration field crew.<\/span><\/span>
OR<\/span><\/span>
Three (3) years of experience working on a habitat restoration field crew performing field work, young<\/span>
adult mentorship, or leadership.<\/span><\/span>
Qualifying military experience can substitute, year for year, for field experience.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


DESIRABLE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/span> Experience in the supervision and training of employees in habitat restoration techniques and<\/span><\/span>
equipment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span>Experience working with veteran populations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span>Experience operating heavy equip<\/span><\/span>ment (mini<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>excavator, backhoe, etc.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span>Wilderness First Aid Certification.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>
