We are currently seeking articles and art about \u201clife underground\u201d\u2014or how <\/span>
creatures have adapted to living in soils and sediments in and around the Salish Sea, <\/span>
and what roles they play in this underground ecosystem.<\/span> For example, did you know <\/span>
that earthworms have bristles they use to anchor their body segments as they pull <\/span>
themselves through the soil? Or that sediments at the bottom of Puget Sound harbor a <\/span>
unique group of organisms? There are lots of interesting stories to share. <\/span> <\/span>
Salish Magazine tells stories about things at people can see first-hand outdoors in our <\/span>
Salish Sea region. It ties the topics into the larger ecosystem and includes lots of <\/span>
illustrations. We rely on volunteers to contribute content\u2014whether you\u2019re an aspiring <\/span>
journalist, essayist, poet, photographer, or artist, we would love to hear from you.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

DEADLINES<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>
Salish Magazine is written and produced by volunteers. We know you\u2019re busy and<\/span>
we can work with you on exact due dates. Here is our general schedule for this<\/span>
issue<\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/span>
ASAP:<\/span> <\/strong>Draft proposals from contributors (this can be a simple email briefly<\/span>
describing your idea).<\/span><\/span>
March 1:<\/span><\/strong> Contributors submit first draft of text and photos\/artwork<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
March 21:<\/span><\/strong> Contributors submit final revised text.<\/span><\/span>
March through May:<\/span> Spring 2022 articles will be published online.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

PROCEDURAL DETAILS<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>
Format Requirements<\/span> <\/span>
\u2022<\/span><\/span> Final prose articles should be around 1,000 to 2,000 words.<\/span> <\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span><\/span> Please provide text files in Word or as a \u201ctxt\u201d file.<\/span> <\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span><\/span> Please provide photographs in high-resolution jpg. (We will send you a link for <\/span>
uploading files that are too big to email.)<\/span> <\/span><\/span>
\u2022<\/span><\/span> Poems, videos, or other cultural interpretations are also welcome; ask us about <\/span>
formatting requirements.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


Our Audience<\/span> <\/strong><\/span>
The goal of Salish Magazine is to tell stories that involve something that people <\/span>
can see, or see at least parts or traces of, preferably in many public places around <\/span>
our region.<\/span> We hope that when they discover those sights, the stories they have read will <\/span>
come to mind, enabling them to see their surroundings in a new context. Tying the story <\/span>
of what is seen, and its history, to our present-day ecosystem functions would be an added <\/span>
bonus. <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


The final content should be <\/span>easy to read for people who don<\/span>!<\/span>t know much about the<\/span>
subject, and more fun than academic <\/span>\u2014 written as if you have a big smile on your face <\/span>
to be sharing your ideas with a bunch of fun people. If you\u2019re more of a technical writer, <\/span>
we can help edit your work for a lay audience. We welcome visual illustrations and have <\/span>
access to photographers and artists who can provide additional illustrations.<\/span> <\/span>
