Today, we have 14,000 members and seven branches in Western Washington, where we deliver most of our outdoor education programming. Thanks to the work of generations of volunteers and our internationally recognized publishing division, we continue to enjoy an outstanding reputation in the fields of outdoor education, recreation, and public lands conservation and advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>Our dedicated volunteers and staff get people outside to experience the power of the natural world. Our 45 staff, divided between our program centers and our nonprofit publishing division, Mountaineers Books, and 2,500+ volunteers work together to achieve our mission to enrich lives by helping people explore, conserve, learn about, and enjoy the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/mountaineers.org\">mountaineers.org<\/a> to learn more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Position Overview<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This position is responsible for providing excellent program instruction for our Mountaineers youth programs. Program Instructors will instruct primarily with outreach programs, but may also assist with Explorers, Pathfinders, and After School Climbing Club. This position will lead single-day or multi-day experiences designed to expose youth to basic outdoor skills, including rock climbing, hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, wilderness first aid, 10 Essentials and Leave No Trace, and more. The curriculum is designed to match the goals of the visiting group and impart on the youth participants a desire to explore and conserve the outdoors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Program Delivery<\/p>\n<p>Instruct and Belay for Indoor and Outdoor Rock Wall during Mountain Workshops<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Inspect equipment prior to use<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Ensure all equipment is set up before group arrival<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Explain rules to group<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Belay group members<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Ensure safe climbing environment at all times<\/p>\n<p>Lead Instructor for Mountain Workshops<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Teach curriculum in 1-2 hour blocks to a variety of age groups. Curriculum may include:<\/p>\n<p>o Map &amp; Compass<\/p>\n<p>o First Aid<\/p>\n<p>o Climbing<\/p>\n<p>o Outdoor Cooking<\/p>\n<p>o Leave No Trace<\/p>\n<p>o Other outdoor skills<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Work closely with volunteer instructors and assistants<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Assist with set-up, clean-up and curriculum development as needed<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Train volunteer assistants as needed<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Lead or co-lead day hikes, snowshoe outings, and day climbing trips to local crags<\/p>\n<p>Quality Service<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Greet youth, members, renters &amp; guests in a professional manner<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Help youth, members, renters &amp; guests find what they need<\/p>\n<p><strong>Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Ability to pass criminal background check<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Proficiency climbing and belaying in a single pitch environment<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Ability to safely lead bolted routes up to 5.7<\/p>\n<p>Desired Qualifications<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Experience working with youth<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Outdoor education experience<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Current First Aid &amp; CPR certification<\/p>\n<p>Cultivating an inclusive staff is central to The Mountaineers focus on advancing equity. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee will be required stand for extended periods of time while leading youth, and must be able to hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to five miles. The employee is occasionally required to bend, squat, run or climb as part of duties leading youth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This position is for a part-time, as-needed employee, averaging 10-20 hours per month (subject to change with demand). Hours vary between weekdays, weekends, daytime and evenings.
