This position\u2019s primary responsibility is to coordinate a multi-year and multi-watershed research and monitoring program investigating the impact of invasive reed canary grass on water quality, flow regime, sediment transport, and vegetative characteristics of Olympic Peninsula streams. This position also supports current Scotch broom research and eDNA monitoring as needed. The results of this study will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed ecological science journals.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Research Assistant (RA) reports to and works closely with 10KYI\u2019s Research Coordinator, Executive Director, Watershed Project Coordinator, and GIS Specialist; and works in partnership with private landowners and staff from government agencies, tribes, and non-profit organizations.<\/li>\n<li>This RA\u00a0is responsible for implementing fieldwork,\u00a0managing a crew of\u00a0two\u00a0or more technicians,\u00a0communicating plans and results, identifying and working with landowners for access to more study sites, safely transporting personnel and equipment to sites, data management\u00a0and reporting, and providing presentations, verbal and written updates,\u00a0and\u00a0educational outreach materials\u00a0to the public and partners.<\/li>\n<li>10KYI works in\u00a0collaboration with federal, state, and local\u00a0agencies, tribes, and non-profit organizations\u00a0to implement\u00a0other applied\u00a0research\u00a0and monitoring projects.\u00a0\u00a0These collaborations provide opportunities to network with and learn from peers in the field, and the Research Assistant and team provide support to\u00a0these projects as\u00a0opportunities arise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ideal individual is self-reliant, likes the rain, and enjoys life in remote rural communities, and exploring on the Olympic Peninsula. 10KYI\u2019s office and operations base is located in the community of Forks, Washington, in close proximity with the wild Washington coast and Olympic National Park.<\/p>\n<p>The RA\u00a0will be provided a\u00a0new\u00a04wd truck for project\u00a0use, and\u00a0is expected\u00a0to\u00a0meet the team and truck at\u00a0the office in Forks or\u00a0duty station in\u00a0Quinault, to the south.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DUTIES &amp;\u00a0RESPONSIBILITIES:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This position requires excellent\u00a0observational,\u00a0communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills, and\u00a0excellent physical condition for\u00a0hiking, wading, and\u00a0working outdoors in all weather conditions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Coordinate, supervise, and implement reed canary grass research following 10KYI and other studies\u2019 best practices, methods, and policies<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Manage and coordinate\u00a0research\u00a0technicians<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Oversee and direct the activities of the field technicians, including field data collection and data\u00a0entry<\/li>\n<li>Manage and maintain\u00a0research\u00a0equipment<\/li>\n<li>Maintain calibration and accuracy-check logs for equipment QA\/QC<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Ensure data quality during field\u00a0operations<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Perform data entry and reporting using Microsoft Office Suite<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Summarize data and develop reports on sites and\u00a0activities<\/li>\n<li>Manage equipment and supply,\u00a0ordering and\u00a0maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Prioritize, supervise and conduct\u00a0field activities\u00a0to find, map,\u00a0measure, and record all variables\u00a0of interest pertaining to the study\u00a0in a variety of forested and open riverine\u00a0and wetland\u00a0habitats, pastures,\u00a0gravel mines,\u00a0and\u00a0roads<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Work with GIS staff to develop maps for planning, fieldwork, and\u00a0reporting<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Coordinate communication of intended\u00a0monitoring activities\u00a0and complete reports of project activities for\u00a010KYI,\u00a0partners, landowners, land managers, and the public<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Assist in the development of communication, outreach programs and presentations, and educational materials related to reed canary grass research, resources, and opportunities<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"10\" data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Work with the\u00a0executive\u00a0director and other staff to develop fundable project ideas consistent with 10KYI\u2019s\u00a0mission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"11\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\">A\u00a0Bachelor\u2019s degree from an accredited institution in\u00a0ecology,\u00a0natural\u00a0sciences,\u00a0biology,\u00a0hydrology, or a related field;\u00a0and three years of experience in ecological fieldwork<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"11\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Expertise in stream monitoring techniques such as stream gaging, temperature monitoring, pebble counts,\u00a0and\u00a0vegetation surveys<\/li>\n<li>Experience calibrating and troubleshooting stream monitoring equipment such as flow meter and DO\u00a0meter<\/li>\n<li>Experience in study design and set\u00a0up<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"11\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" research<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with the biology, ecology, and local effects of reed canary grass<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of native and invasive plants on the Olympic Peninsula<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of eDNA sampling techniques and procedures<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"14\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Knowledge of Scotch broom biology
