Funds to support the Washington Watchable Wildlife Grant come from the\u00a0<a class=\"external-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.wa.gov\/vehicleregistration\/spwildonwa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wild on Washington: Eagle license plate<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 one of WDFW\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"License plates\" href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/licenses\/license-plates\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"9905ecc5-2029-4989-a445-b9746b5dec68\">specialized license plates.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Watchable wildlife or wildlife viewing is a recreational activity of observing animals or signs of animals in their habitats (e.g. tracks, nests, scat). This includes exploring habitat in person or online to better understand wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>WDFW\u2019s Watchable Wildlife Program as defined by\u00a0<a class=\"external-link \" href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/rcw\/default.aspx?cite=77.32.560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RCW 77.32.560<\/a>\u00a0includes but is not limited to: Initiating partnerships with communities to jointly develop watchable wildlife projects, building infrastructure to serve wildlife viewers, assisting and training communities in conducting wildlife watching events, developing destination wildlife viewing corridors and trails, tours, maps, brochures, and travel aides, and offering grants to assist rural communities in identifying key wildlife attractions and ways to protect and promote them.<\/p>\n<p>WDFW will accept grant applications for projects that create, improve, increase, and\/or promote opportunities for communities to view wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>WDFW encourages initiatives brought forward by\/co-developed with underserved communities to address stated community needs and that are imbued with equity and justice values. They will benefit or address barriers of underrepresented communities and\/or apply diverse, equitable, and inclusive concepts in their projects.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2021 Grant application schedule<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>May 31<\/strong>: Application open<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 25:<\/strong>\u00a0Application due<\/li>\n<li><strong>July 26 \u2013 Aug 20:<\/strong>\u00a0Application review<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug 23:<\/strong>\u00a0Award notification<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aug 23 \u2013 Sept\u00a024:<\/strong>\u00a0Grants issued<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sept 27:<\/strong>\u00a0Project initiation<\/li>\n<li><strong>June 23, 2023<\/strong>: All costs must be incurred and project deliverables due<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Funding<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Total available<\/strong>: $30,000<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grant award minimum:<\/strong>\u00a0$5,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Grant is intended to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create, improve, increase, and\/or promote opportunities to view wildlife<\/li>\n<li>Benefit Washington wildlife and residents<\/li>\n<li>Increase awareness of wildlife conservation efforts in communities<\/li>\n<li>Increase community involvement in wildlife conservation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Grant is NOT intended to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fund citizen\/community science with data collection as the primary goal<\/li>\n<li>Fund projects outside of Washington<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Project examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develop\u00a0a pollinator garden in your schoolyard<\/li>\n<li>Take\u00a0students from a\u00a0<a class=\"external-link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.k12.wa.us\/policy-funding\/grants-grant-management\/closing-educational-achievement-gaps-title-i-part\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Title I school<\/a>\u00a0on a trip to a local\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/places-to-go\/wildlife-areas\">WDFW wildlife area<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Create signage for wildlife identification in a park or along a trail<\/li>\n<li>Build\u00a0purple martin or bat boxes with a scout troop<\/li>\n<li>Install wildlife viewing platforms<\/li>\n<li>Host\u00a0a community event to ride bikes and go birding together<\/li>\n<li>Incorporate\u00a0ADA-accessible features and materials into a nature center<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Who can apply<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Individuals<\/li>\n<li>Non-profits<\/li>\n<li>Schools<\/li>\n<li>Local and county governments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>WDFW employees are NOT eligible to apply for the Watchable Wildlife Grant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matching funds and efforts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A project match of 25% strongly encouraged. Match must be listed in project proposal.
