Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
We are recruiting to hire at the Fish Hatchery Specialist\u00a01 or 2 level and we will train a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 up to the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 level.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/p>\nDepending on which level you are hired at, your salary range will be as follows:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 – $2,864.00 – $3,701.00 Monthly<\/p>\n
Fish Hatchery Specialist 2\u00a0– $3,144.00 – $4,083.00 Monthly<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
With that in mind,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
Picture yourself<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0being responsible for the direct daily care and culture of approximately 6,000 white sturgeon larvae as well as over 300,000 rainbow trout.<\/p>\n
This is an opportunity to,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>assist with fish culture operations at Sherman Creek Hatchery including net pen operations to stock rainbow trout for harvest and subsistence fishing in the Columbia River above Grand Coulee Dam.<\/p>\n
With your experience,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you will independently perform a variety of professional tasks such as fish marking techniques for identification and recovery of species.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2,\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
- \n
- Performs fish marking techniques for identification and recovery of species.<\/li>\n
- Identifies, sorts and processes marked brood fish – compiles and records data for biological analysis.<\/li>\n
- Calculates daily feed requirements, feeding frequency, and delivery rates based on species, densities, fish size, temperature, flows, turbidity, dissolved oxygen levels, fish health and desired growth rates.<\/li>\n
- Monitors fish behavior and records mortalities – examines mortalities for clinical signs of fish pathogens and monitors water quality\/rearing environments.<\/li>\n
- Administers the correct dose of drugs and anesthetic – calibrates, cleans, and sterilizes inoculation and fish handling equipment.<\/li>\n
- Liberates various sizes and species of fish to the waters of the state, using airplane, backpack, barge, truck, forced release, and volitional release methods – operates vehicles equipped with fish tanks of various sizes in compliance with state and federal laws.<\/li>\n
- Collects, monitors, and records weather and water quality parameters which includes temperatures, flow, turbidity, dissolved oxygen\/total gas, pH, total suspended solids (TSS), and settle-able solids (SS) – monitors, adjusts, and maintains water treatment systems.<\/li>\n
- Makes scheduled and\/or emergency repairs to structures such as buildings, docks, rearing vessels, and net pens.<\/li>\n
- Operates, monitors, maintains, and repairs mechanical or electrical systems for chemical delivery, domestic and hatchery water supplies, feed delivery, filters and hatchery intakes, sewage, and ventilation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
WORKING CONDITIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Work is performed outdoors, in all weather conditions at the hatchery, at the net pen facility and on boat\/barge operations on large lakes.<\/li>\n
- Work includes performing strenuous physical activities and mechanical tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
- In-Training Plan:<\/strong>\n

- The FHS1 performs a variety of technical and scientific fish culture duties, performs hatchery related maintenance, and participates in an agency supervised fish culture training program.<\/li>\n
- Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month in-training plan, the selected candidate will automatically be promoted to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
- Schedule: \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\n

- Typically, Monday \u2013 Sunday \u2013 7:30 a.m. \u2013 4:00 p.m.<\/li>\n
- This position is also on call 24\/7 when on standby.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
- Standby:\u00a0<\/strong>\n
- \n
- Standby duties are currently assigned. (Candidate will need to be within 45 minutes response time while on standby).<\/li>\n

Qualifications<\/p>\n
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Knowledge of water dynamics (e.g. flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, dissolved oxygen, etc.).<\/li>\n
- Basic math (add, subtract, multiply, and divide) skills.<\/li>\n
- Basic understanding of spreadsheets and word processing.<\/li>\n
- Knowledge of and ability to calibrate specialized instruments (e.g. scales, dissolved oxygen meters, flow meters, and pressure gauges).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Ability to:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Safely\/properly use tools and equipment while performing maintenance.<\/li>\n
- Troubleshoot on-site mechanical malfunctions.<\/li>\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Basic fish culture techniques and rearing procedures.<\/li>\n
- One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 and successful completion of agency supervised training program.<\/li>\n
- Associate degree in fisheries technology, biology, or closely allied field<\/li>\n
- Two years of education towards a bachelor\u2019s degree in fisheries, biology, or closely allied field.<\/li>\n
- Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school.<\/li>\n
- One year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Knowledge of:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Fish species, gender, and disease signs.<\/li>\n
- Working knowledge of biological principles, hydrology, fish ecology, river ecosystem, spawning protocols.<\/li>\n
