We hold ourselves accountable\u00a0to both the quality of our work, and the way in which we perform it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This is an opportunity\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to\u00a0execute field and lab ecotoxicological studies to collect, organize and analyze data under WDFW\u2019s TBiOS (Toxics Biological Observation System).<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Picture yourself\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>identifying and measuring toxic contaminants in Puget Sound organisms,\u00a0contributing to a long-term program focused on the health of the Puget Sound ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With your experience,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>you will evaluate the health of organisms to determine whether conditions are improving or worsening.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The optimal candidates<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>are team players who are motivated and passionate about restoring Puget Sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>We are seeking a candidate<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with demonstrated skills representing WDFW values of professionalism, accountability, empathy, integrity, and respect.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Duties<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p><strong><em>Using established TBiOS (Toxics Biological Observation System) standard operating procedures, and under the supervision of senior staff, o<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>ur Scientific Technician 2,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conducts regular field surveys to collect fish and invertebrate samples for ongoing toxics monitoring.<\/li>\n<li>Uses a wide range of sampling techniques including bottom trawling from a chartered fishing vessel, gill-netting for Pacific herring from small vessels, beach seining for juvenile salmonids, and deploying\/retrieving caged mussels in the intertidal zone.<\/li>\n<li>Processes tissue samples in the lab for biological metrics, analysis of toxic chemicals, evaluation of diseases, and other health-related endpoints.<\/li>\n<li>Helps to manage all lab related activities including tracking and labeling tissue samples, transporting samples to and from labs, and maintaining appropriate lab conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Prepares mussels and cages for field-deployments.<\/li>\n<li>Processes field data related to sampling effort and locations, tissue types collected, lab data related to sample metrics, and chemical concentration data returned from the analytical laboratory.<\/li>\n<li>Manages and maintains all TBiOS field sampling gear.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Work Setting, including hazards: \u00a0<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Fieldwork\u00a0<\/strong>includes collecting fish or invertebrates from boats and along the Puget Sound shoreline, this may include living on a boat for up to a week at a time.<\/li>\n<li>Inclement weather, rough seas, rocky\/muddy shorelines in remote areas during the day and night.<\/li>\n<li>Lifting heavy objects such as ice-filled coolers and handling fish that may possess sharp and venomous spines or bite.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laboratory and desk work<\/strong>\u00a0include sitting or standing at a lab bench dissecting fish for long periods of time.
