{"id":38868,"date":"2021-03-31T16:51:08","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T23:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/?p=38868"},"modified":"2021-03-31T16:51:11","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T23:51:11","slug":"job-greenhouse-grower-fourth-corner-nurseries-bellingham-wa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.evergreen.edu\/mesweekly\/job-greenhouse-grower-fourth-corner-nurseries-bellingham-wa\/","title":{"rendered":"Job: Greenhouse Grower, Fourth Corner Nurseries (Bellingham, WA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Job Type Temporary<br \/>\nSalary Details DOE<br \/>\nRequired Experience 0 &#8211; 1 years<\/p>\n<div class=\"job-frame-description-content\">\n<p>In operation for 38 years,\u00a0Fourth Corner\u00a0Nurseries is a renowned producer of native plants for the ecological restoration and container nursery markets for the Pacific Northwest and beyond.\u00a0We\u00a0specialize in source-identified, seed-propagated, bare root native\u00a0plants including trees and shrubs, perennials, bulbs, graminoids, and aquatics.\u00a0We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced grower to strengthen our expanding greenhouse program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Job\u00a0Description\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Duties:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the direction of the Greenhouse Manager, the Greenhouse Grower is responsible for overseeing the daily needs of two greenhouses and adjacent outdoor growing spaces.\u00a0 Daily tasks include\u00a0assessing crops to determine irrigation needs, watering and fertilizing by programming or manually running overhead irrigation, hand watering, and\/or using a fertilizer injector. \u00a0You will coordinate with and divide the (seven day a week) task of watering with the Production Assistant, who will water most weekends (May to October) and some weekdays.\u00a0 Occasional weekend watering may be required.<\/p>\n<p>The Greenhouse Grower will also be the primary point person for the greenhouse integrated pest management (IPM) program. The IPM program will be an early research and development opportunity for this position. In addition to program development and routine crop monitoring, preventative and curative pesticide applications will be the responsibility of this position.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond daily tasks, plant propagation and production tasks are also a responsibility of this position.\u00a0 Under the direction of the Greenhouse Manager, spring work includes sowing, thinning, and transplanting, and summer and fall work includes crop monitoring, grading, and preparing orders.\u00a0 This is a physical position,\u00a0requiring\u00a0extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and at times repeated lifting and carrying of up to 50 pounds in a wide range of temperatures and humidity.\u00a0 This is also a mentally challenging position, requiring frequent decision making, thinking on your feet, juggling competing priorities, strong attention to detail, and accurate record keeping.<\/p>\n<p>The greenhouse program is a new and expanding part of the business.\u00a0 Protocols are still being developed and refined, and trials are being conducted alongside production crops.\u00a0 There will be opportunities for a successful candidate to develop or grow into roles that are yet to be defined.\u00a0 There will also be times when your help will be needed on various tasks around the nursery (e.g. order fulfilment, seed collecting, inventory).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ideal candidate will have horticultural experience, interest in native plants, be motivated, energetic, ready to take on responsibility and be a part of our team.\u00a0 Someone who is adaptable, industrious and interested in growth will be happy here.\u00a0 Folks who desire a highly structured workplace will be disappointed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Minimum requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At least one year of experience growing in a production scale greenhouse, including irrigation responsibilities<\/li>\n<li>Working knowledge of greenhouse systems and able to adjust settings and troubleshoot issues to optimize for plant health<\/li>\n<li>Valid WA state pesticide applicator\u2019s license, or ability and willingness to get a license<\/li>\n<li>Interest in developing an IPM program and willingness to become the primary pesticide applicator for greenhouse crops (both preventative and curative)<\/li>\n<li>Able to safely perform the physical aspects of the position<\/li>\n<li>Interest in a long-term position at our nursery<\/li>\n<li>Reliable, efficient, and attentive to detail<\/li>\n<li>Able to assess competing priorities, make decisions independently, solve problems, and know when to ask for help<\/li>\n<li>Possesses strong communication skills, both written and verbal; able to accept constructive feedback<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrated experience working\u00a0well\u00a0independently and with a team<\/li>\n<li>Comfortable using a tablet or smartphone and able to record data accurately both on paper and a computer<\/li>\n<li>Familiar with native plant\u00a0species\u00a0and\u00a0botanical nomenclature,\u00a0or willingness to learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Desired qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrated experience designing or implementing an integrated pest management program<\/li>\n<li>Training or experience in plant pathology, disease management, crop science, nutrition, plant physiology, or propagation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Terms of Employment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a termed full-time (40 hours per week) position with an opportunity to become full-time permanent.\u00a0 April 15th\u00a0&#8211;
