June 30th, 2021\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<p><strong>WDFW staff comprise a talented and passionate group of people dedicated to protecting Washington\u2019s Fish &amp; Wildlife Resources. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Our employees serve the public with integrity, we hold ourselves accountable to both the quality of our work, and the way in which we perform it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>With that in mind,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Picture yourself<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0conducting surveys and monitoring for endangered butterflies.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>This is an opportunity\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to accurately record data and quantify the abundance and distribution of butterflies following reintroduction efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The optimal candidate\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>takes pride in their work, uses sound judgment, and can work collaboratively.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>We are seeking a candidate<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with demonstrated skill representing WDFW values of professionalism, accountability, empathy, integrity, and respect.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Duties<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p><strong>Our Butterfly Technician,\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collects data relative to butterfly position, abundance, and behavior during multiple life stages.<\/li>\n<li>Records data using voice recorders and paper forms in a precise, accurate, and consistent fashion.<\/li>\n<li>Captures, handles, and releases adult and\/or larval butterflies.<\/li>\n<li>Conducts surveys for larval nests and monitors larval development.<\/li>\n<li>Transcribes field data and conducts accuracy checks.<\/li>\n<li>Conducts habitat assessment surveys for an endangered butterfly to quantify abundance and distribution of habitat characteristics.<\/li>\n<li>Is responsible for the layout of sampling grids, and data upload\/download between GIS and GPS technologies.<\/li>\n<li>Under the supervision of an agency biologist, performs maintenance of spatial accuracy and integrity of GIS data using GPS technology.<\/li>\n<li>Is responsible for the simultaneous assessments of numerous vegetation characteristics using ocular (vision) estimates based on evolving field protocols.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Work Setting, including hazards: \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Field work occurs in prairie environments, in the south Puget lowlands and on uneven walking surfaces.<\/li>\n<li>Some sites on Joint Base Lewis-McChord may contain unexploded ordnance (artillery shells) &#8211; work on these sites requires special training and safety equipment (flak jacket\/helmet), which can weigh up to 30 lbs., in addition to personal field equipment (binoculars\/data recorders).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Schedule:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>This is an on-call position, hours may vary and are typically up to 40 hours per week.<\/li>\n<li>Work may occur on any day of the week and some weekend work is required.<\/li>\n<li>Field work hours may be highly variable and are dependent on weather conditions and other scheduling issues.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Travel Requirements:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Daily travel to\/from field sites located within 50 miles of assigned work location.<\/li>\n<li>Occasional regional travel may be required to collect or distribute animals to captive-rearing facilities or for other purposes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tools and Equipment: \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Operating a pick-up truck, GPS units, binoculars, and other standard field equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Occasional use of hand and power tools for restoration of other purposes may also be required.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Office work requires use of standard equipment including computers (including Microsoft Office suite and ArcGIS software), copiers, printers, etc. \u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Qualifications<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p><strong>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Six (6) semesters or nine quarter hours of college course work involving major study in biology, zoology, natural sciences, or closely allied field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>AND<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>One (1) season of field data collection experience. (Minimum of 3 months).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AND<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Knowledge of principles and procedures of biological research and management, standard field methods, and population measurement techniques.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Knowledge of and experience using GPS technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0AND\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ability to:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Visually estimate distances to animals with a high degree of accuracy. \u00a0(Nearest 10 centimeters).<\/li>\n<li>Search for and identify south Puget Sound prairie butterflies by sight in the field.<\/li>\n<li>Sit, stand, or walk for prolonged periods while observing and interpreting behaviors of wildlife species.<\/li>\n<li>Visually discriminate when identifying and distinguishing biological and physical characteristics of plants and animals.<\/li>\n<li>Document, interpret and communicate wildlife species\/habitat information in a detailed manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Competencies:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Proficiency in using Microsoft Office software, especially Microsoft Word and Excel.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate in unfamiliar and undeveloped areas in adverse weather conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please Note:\u00a0<\/strong>Professional equivalent experience may substitute, year for year, for the education requirement, as long as it is in biology, zoology, natural sciences, or closely allied field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Certifications\/Licenses:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li>Valid Driver\u2019s License.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Bachelor\u2019s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, or environmental science.<\/li>\n<li>Two field seasons conducting surveys and collecting behavioral observations of butterflies.
