Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
With that in mind,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
Picture yourself<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0rearing anadromous (fish born in freshwater who spend most of their lives in saltwater) and inland species of fish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
These are opportunities\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>to perform a variety of technical and scientific fish culture duties and hatchery related maintenance.<\/p>\n

Our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2,\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
- \n
- Feeds fish their calculated daily rations.<\/li>\n
- Monitors fish behavior, fish health, eggs, and fish production.<\/li>\n
- Administers therapeutants, calculates and administers drugs as prescribed.<\/li>\n
- Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.<\/li>\n
- Collects fish tissue and fluid samples and records data.<\/li>\n
- Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.<\/li>\n
- Accurately enters data into forms and spreadsheets (fish mortality, feed sheets, feed inventory, chemical usage).<\/li>\n
- Identifies marked adults and collects tags\/marks for bio sampling.<\/li>\n
- Understands correct safety protocols for all hazardous chemicals\/drugs used for all treatments and chemical storage\/handling, i.e. formalin, peroxide, anesthetics, paint thinner, gas\/diesel, potassium, and other chemicals).<\/li>\n
- Monitors water quality parameters using dissolved oxygen meters (calibrates when needed) and chemicals such as Hach kits in order to insure a safe rearing environment.<\/li>\n
- Performs fish inoculations, medical or chemical treatments as prescribed by the Fish Health Specialist.<\/li>\n
- Contacts Fish Health Specialist when fish are showing signs of disease or illness and works closely with them in treating and diagnosing illness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
WORKING CONDITIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong>\n

- Work is performed outside, in all weather conditions.<\/li>\n
- It includes walking, climbing, lifting, and carrying 50 pounds frequently.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
- Schedule: \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\n
- \n
- Typically, 40 hours per week.<\/li>\n
- 8 hours per day with 10 days on and 4 days off.<\/li>\n
- Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.<\/li>\n
- Schedule may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
- Standby:\u00a0<\/strong>\n

- Standby duties have been assigned.<\/li>\n
- A portion of the standby rotation will be at a remote site in a travel trailer.<\/li>\n
- All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.<\/li>\n

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

- Basic fish culture techniques and rearing procedures.<\/li>\n
- Water dynamics (flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc.).<\/li>\n
- Basic math (add\/subtract\/multiply\/divide).<\/li>\n
- Calculate and understand quantities and proportions.<\/li>\n
- Computer knowledge, basic understanding of spreadsheets, and word processing.<\/li>\n
- Calibration of specialized instruments (scales and dissolved oxygen meters).<\/li>\n
- Safe, proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.<\/li>\n
- Safety regulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- An Associate\u2019s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field\u00a0AND<\/strong>\u00a0one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n

- Two (2) years of education towards a Bachelor\u2019s degree in fisheries or closely allied field\u00a0AND<\/strong>\u00a0one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n
