passionate group of people dedicated to protecting Washington\u2019s natural resources while providing sustainable recreational opportunities for all.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>This position reports to the lead technician on the Wind River, under the\u00a0Lower Columbia Lead Salmon and Steelhead Scientist, and is responsible for collection and database entry of field data used in the juvenile and adult steelhead monitoring program on the Wind River (BPA project # 199801900 Wind River Watershed Assessment). \u00a0 Primary duties include maintenance, installation and operation of rotary screw traps, operation of an adult fishway trap, handling, biological data collection and tagging of adult and juvenile steelhead, spawning ground surveys, snorkel surveys, and database entry.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Duties<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p>This position monitors the health and diversity of fish populations in the Wind River and provides information needed to develop sustainable recreational opportunities. \u00a0Field data collected by this position allows the supervisor, lead scientist, and unit leader to meet agency goals identified in the Strategic Plan. \u00a0One of the primary objectives of the Wind River steelhead monitoring program is to assess the population response to the removal of Hemlock Dam.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>Collect mark-recapture data used to develop abundance estimates of juvenile steelhead via screw traps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasks include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deploy internal (PIT) tags on juvenile steelhead<\/li>\n<li>Examine live specimens and collect biological data (scales, lengths).<\/li>\n<li>Use of rigging (cable, clamps) and tools, winches, ropes, and occasionally inflatable boats to place and secure traps in deep, swift water<\/li>\n<li>Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (dry suits, PFDs, waders), boats and rope systems to access floating screw traps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Collect data used in mark-resight population estimators for adult steelhead.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasks include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Operate and maintain Shipherd Falls adult ladder trap<\/li>\n<li>Examine live specimens for existing visual and internal ID marks using visual inspection and electronic scanning equipment<\/li>\n<li>Deploy internal and external ID tags on adult and juvenile steelhead<\/li>\n<li>Collect scales, biological and morphological data from live specimens.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct adult steelhead mark-resight surveys via walking and snorkeling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Juvenile steelhead (screw trap) database entry in Microsoft Access<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasks include:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintain, backup, download, and edit data from ruggedized tablets used to collect screw trap data<\/li>\n<li>QA\/QC juvenile data from screw traps in Microsoft Access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Adult steelhead (ladder trap) database entry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tasks include: \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintain, backup, download, and edit data from field forms and\/or ruggedized tablet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Working setting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>85% outdoors, 15% office\/indoors.<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor tasks include working in and around deep, swift flowing, cold streams and trap systems consisting of heavy rigging and moving parts.<\/li>\n<li>Weather conditions during this appointment can range from heavy rain\/snow to moderate heat.<\/li>\n<li>Heavy loads and long walks over uneven, slippery and difficult terrain are the norm.<\/li>\n<li>A level of comfort and experience working in and around rivers is a must.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Experience or comfort level wading in streams and swimming in water deeper than 5\u2019 is required.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Schedule:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This position will work a five-day, 40-hour week including both weekend days.<\/li>\n<li>Work hours will be from 8:00am to 5:00pm. \u00a0 Infrequent, unscheduled trap checks at night are occasionally dictated by fish quantities or high stream flows which can threaten the traps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Travel Requirements:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Travel from office to work locations provided by employer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Tools and Equipment:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most field work is accomplished wearing agency provided chest waders, dry suits or wet suits, PFDs, and frequently rain gear.<\/li>\n<li>Use of basic automotive hand tools, ropes, cabling, winches, etc occurs frequently.<\/li>\n<li>Specialty equipment is regularly used for capture of fish (traps, seins) anesthesia, tagging, electronic scanning, and storing data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Customer Interactions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Frequent, unscheduled interactions with public occur at many field work locations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>License:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>A valid unrestricted driver\u2019s license required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Qualifications<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>OR<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Preferred\/Desired Qualifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical and mental ability to safely access remote streams in canyon settings, often in adverse (wet\/cold or hot) conditions, and conduct surveys up to five miles in length in a safe and timely manner, are a requirement.<\/li>\n<li>Comfort level and ability to operate inflatable boats on a flowing river is preferable.<\/li>\n<li>Training\/certification for these required tasks will be provided by WDFW as needed.<\/li>\n<li>Previous experience or proficiency with installation and operation of rotary screw traps and adult salmonid traps and seines, experience with live handling, PIT tagging, and biological data collection on adult and juvenile steelhead or salmon are preferable.<\/li>\n<li>Previous experience\/proficiency with PTagis Microsoft Access and Excel data entry is preferable.<\/li>\n<li>Candidates must be capable of accomplishing the above duties and
