Founded in 1996, San Juan Safaris provides tours focusing on respectful wildlife viewing, education, and conservation efforts. San Juan Safaris offers whale watch and wildlife tours by motorized vessel February through November. Our sister company, San Juan Island Outfitters, founded 2008, offers three- and five-hour professionally guided sea kayak tours, overnight kayak-camping excursions, in addition to whale and wildlife tours via motor vessel.<\/p>\n<p>On all tours, an emphasis is always placed on safety, guest service, and respecting the environment. Our goal is to provide a personal, inspiring and educational experience to each of our guests to foster a sense of connection with the marine ecosystem. Our hope is that our guests will return home with lifelong memories and a new appreciation for the environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naturalists<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>San Juan Safaris &amp; San Juan Outfitters upholds high industry standards in professionalism, knowledge, and experience.\u00a0 We strive to be the leaders in our field, and hope to continue to achieve this through our Marine Naturalists.<\/p>\n<p>Marine\u00a0Naturalists are expected to educate, inform,\u00a0and monitor all passengers during our\u00a03-4 hour\u00a0tours. Presenting information on whales,\u00a0most notably our local populations of killer whales,\u00a0other local\u00a0marine mammals, birds, general ecology, whale watching guidelines, as well as\u00a0general\u00a0information on the Pacific Northwest.\u00a0We aim to provide an immersive experience, not just focusing on whales!\u00a0Education continues off of the water as naturalists are required to write blog posts detailing their experiences on the water.<\/p>\n<p>Onboard\u00a0Naturalists\u00a0are\u00a0also\u00a0crew!\u00a0Acting\u00a0as\u00a0First Mate, handling lines, and monitoring safety\u00a0on the vessel\u00a0are all a part of our Naturalists\u2019\u00a0primary\u00a0responsibilities. For\u00a0this reason, previous boat experience is preferred, but not required.\u00a0Pre- and post-trip boat cleanings\u00a0are also an important part of the\u00a0position.\u00a0Naturalists should expect to be on their feet, on a dynamic moving platform, for 5-10 hours a day.<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost,\u00a0this is a customer service position and the successful applicant will be an extraordinary communicator and people person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major Duties:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Perform duties as First Mate to Captain, including familiarization with all safety procedures.<\/li>\n<li>Educate and informguests about\u00a0the Salish Sea. This may include material on\u00a0natural history,\u00a0wildlife,\u00a0general ecology, local human history, the San Juan Islands, environmental threats and changes, and current events.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor all passengers to assure that they are comfortable, warm,\u00a0and safe. Know where books, binoculars, blankets and jackets are, and keep guests well informed.<\/li>\n<li>Clean and prepare vessel pre- and post-trip.<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for continuing to\u00a0learn new material\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0Salish Sea Marine\u00a0Ecosystem\u00a0with the goal of\u00a0becoming an expert.<\/li>\n<li>Writing daily trip reports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>College education preferred. A background in natural sciences\u00a0including, but not limited to,\u00a0marine biology, geology, cetaceans, marine mammals, general ecology,\u00a0outdoor education,\u00a0and ornithology\u00a0is\u00a0preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Working knowledge of boats, and experience,working on open water<\/li>\n<li>Strong public speaking and education skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Must have current first aid and CPR certification, including AED<\/li>\n<li>Subject to pre-employment andrandom drug testing<\/li>\n<li>Access to a working\u00a0phone\u00a0with voicemail<\/li>\n<li>Non-smoker<\/li>\n<li>Reliable transportation<\/li>\n<li>Available Saturdays, Sundays, evenings and holidaysthroughout the summer<\/li>\n<li>Ability to comfortably lift 50 pounds<\/li>\n<li>Ability to safely stand and move around on aon a dynamic moving platform for 5-10 hours a day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Details<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Competitive pay starting at $14 per hour, plus tips.
