Skills<\/p>\n<p>The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maintenance Workers I are responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and\/or cleaning in and around city buildings, structures, and property.<\/li>\n<li>Assist with maintenance activities performed in Public Works, Parks, Olympia Center, and City facilities.<\/li>\n<li>Perform basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting; brush and litter removal; operation of tractors, hand\/power mowers, edgers and fertilizer application devices; and may be trained on specialized equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Assists with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shoveling various materials; operate hand\/power tools; and other basic street maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>Drives pickup and dump truck; and operate roller, paving machines, back hoe or street sweeper.<\/li>\n<li>Assists with street signs and markings, guard rail, curbing and sidewalk repairs.<\/li>\n<li>Assists in digging ditches and laying sewer\/water\/stormwater pipe; cleaning and checking valves; monitoring pumps for proper operation; and manhole and pavement repairs.<\/li>\n<li>Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Minimum qualifications &amp; Requirements<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge\/Skills\/Abilities:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.<\/li>\n<li>Skill in operating and maintaining small manual\/power tools and equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to perform strenuous physical activity.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work as a member of a crew.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Experience\/Education:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>One year&#8217;s general work experience required.<\/li>\n<li>Experience in specialty area (i.e. landscaping, building maintenance, streets, etc.) preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Some positions may require the employee obtain special certification (such as Pesticide Applicators card or CDL) within timelines specified by the State of Washington or the City of Olympia.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Special Requirement:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Must possess a valid Washington State driver&#8217;s license and a Class &#8220;A&#8221; commercial driver license valid in the State of Washington.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Supplemental information<\/p>\n<p>Contacts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maintenance Workers I have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination.<\/li>\n<li>However, City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens.<\/li>\n<li>It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience.<\/li>\n<li>If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Supervision:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>None.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Accountability:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The employee is accountable for performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Working Conditions: (Working conditions will vary by assignment.)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Maintenance Workers may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults;
