Public Works, Water Resources is recruiting for a Maintenance Worker I to join our Drinking Water Operations team. This is a fulltime, regular position.\u00a0 This is an AFSCME represented position.<\/p>\n

Ideal Candidate<\/strong>
\nThe ideal candidate should have the following skills and experience:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Minimum of one-year experience in water distribution maintenance and water meter installation.<\/li>\n
  • Strong commitment in customer service.<\/li>\n
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities safely.<\/li>\n
  • Ability to use power equipment and hand tools safely and appropriately.<\/li>\n
  • Ability to assess water leaks and determine if they are on the customer side or the City\u2019s side of the water meter preferred.<\/li>\n
  • Ability to use Cityworks, Drinking Water Operations\u2019 asset management software preferred.<\/li>\n
  • Ability to use Collector, Drinking Water Operations\u2019 inspection database preferred.<\/li>\n
  • Knowledge of navigating Itron mobile collector for water meter readings preferred.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Examples of Duties \/ Knowledge & Skills<\/p>\n

      The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Maintenance Workers I are responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and\/or cleaning in and around city buildings, structures, and property.<\/li>\n
      2. Assist with maintenance activities performed in Public Works, Parks, Olympia Center, and City facilities.<\/li>\n
      3. Perform basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting; brush and litter removal; operation of tractors, hand\/power mowers, edgers and fertilizer application devices; and may be trained on specialized equipment.<\/li>\n
      4. Assists with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shoveling various materials; operate hand\/power tools; and other basic street maintenance.<\/li>\n
      5. Drives pickup and dump truck; and operate roller, paving machines, back hoe or street sweeper.<\/li>\n
      6. Assists with street signs and markings, guard rail, curbing and sidewalk repairs.<\/li>\n
      7. Assists in digging ditches and laying sewer\/water\/stormwater pipe; cleaning and checking valves; monitoring pumps for proper operation; and manhole and pavement repairs.<\/li>\n
      8. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Minimum qualifications & Requirements<\/p>\n

        Knowledge\/Skills\/Abilities:<\/p>\n

        1. Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques.<\/li>\n
        2. Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.<\/li>\n
        3. Skill in operating and maintaining small manual\/power tools and equipment.<\/li>\n
        4. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity.<\/li>\n
        5. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.<\/li>\n
        6. Ability to work as a member of a crew.<\/li>\n
        7. Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Experience\/Education:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. One year’s general work experience required.<\/li>\n
          2. Experience in specialty area (i.e. landscaping, building maintenance, streets, etc.) preferred.<\/li>\n
          3. Some positions may require the employee obtain special certification (such as Pesticide Applicators card or CDL) within timelines specified by the State of Washington or the City of Olympia.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Special Requirement:<\/p>\n

            1. Must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license and a Class “A” commercial driver license valid in the State of Washington.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              1. Maintenance Workers I have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination.<\/li>\n
              2. However, City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens.<\/li>\n
              3. It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience.<\/li>\n
              4. If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    2. Assignments may be outside and may occasionally require work in inclement weather and\/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.<\/li>\n
