This position\u2019s r<span style=\"color: #000000\">esponsibilities will include developing, initiating, and leading civil litigation and advocacy aimed at ensuring that communities and persons experiencing environmental harm receive improved human health and environmental protection. In addition to case evaluation, development, and litigation, a key part of this position will be to conduct outreach and develop relationships with affected communities and provide effective communication between AGO and communities experiencing environmental harm.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Duties<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<p>Cases brought by the Environmental Protection Division include matters such as:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/monsanto-pay-record-95-million-end-ferguson-s-lawsuit-over-pcbs\"><em><u>Washington v. Monsanto<\/u><\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em>\u00a0seeking damages associated with polychlorinated biphenyls, which adversely impact human health and the environment;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-s-hanford-worker-safety-lawsuit-leads-big-win-workers\"><em><u>Washington v. Perry<\/u><\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em>\u00a0regarding worker exposure to tank vapors at the Hanford nuclear facility;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-ferguson-leads-lawsuit-protect-america-s-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge-oil\"><em><u>Washington et al. v. Bernhardt<\/u><\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>challenging oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-ferguson-files-clean-water-act-lawsuit-against-gold-mining-companies\"><em><u>Washington v. Crown Resources<\/u><\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>suing a gold mining company for violations of state and federal water pollution law; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/washington-leads-lawsuit-against-trump-administration-illegally-sabotaging\"><em><u>California v. Bernhardt<\/u><\/em><\/a>,\u00a0challenging the rollback of regulations implementing the National Environmental Policy Act. In addition, our attorneys lead multistate amicus briefs, such as in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-ferguson-files-briefs-challenging-president-trump-s-national-monument\"><em><u>Wilderness Society v. Trump<\/u><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"color: #000000\"><em>,<\/em><\/span>\u00a0challenging the President&#8217;s rescission of National Monuments in Utah.<span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As the above cases indicate, this position&#8217;s work will include cases arising under state or federal law, and may relate to a wide range of environmental and environmental justice topics, such as water and air quality, toxic chemicals, climate change, and worker safety. We often collaborate closely with other divisions in the Attorney General&#8217;s Office, environmental and natural resource agencies at the Federal, state, and local level, and community stakeholders.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Duties typical of attorneys within the Division include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Directing and assisting in investigations and case development;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Developing creative litigation strategies to address complex legal issues;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Drafting pleadings, motions and memoranda from initial filing through post-judgment proceedings;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Developing federal administrative cases, including by drafting comments on federal rulemakings and other actions and filing challenges to federal decisions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Representing the AGO in public settings on matters that may be of a sensitive or high-profile nature;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Conducting all aspects of discovery; and<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Motions practice, trials, and participating in post-trial proceedings including any appeals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This position may require occasional travel, including overnight trips. AAG salaries start at $69,396.
