IAE seeks to hire an Eastern Oregon Native Seed Collection Crew Leader for the 2021 collection season (May-August). The Seed Crew Leader will work closely with IAE program staff to collect seed for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to support the Seeds of Success (SOS) program administered by the BLM. The Seed Crew Leader will be responsible for leading a crew of one to two additional technicians, working in the Burns and Vale BLM districts, and based out of the BLM field office in Vale, Oregon. The crew leader will work with IAE program staff to manage field trip logistics, lead field work, manage seed collections, and assist in data management and reporting. All positions are field-based and will work four consecutive 10-hour days, typically camping in remote locations during the work week. The crew will travel to field sites in IAE vehicles. This is an exciting opportunity to practice leadership skills, explore the varied landscapes of eastern Oregon, and contribute to the collection of native seeds for habitat restoration.<\/p>\n<p>POSITION WILL BE BASED IN VALE, OREGON<\/p>\n<p><strong>START DATE:<\/strong>\u00a0May 3, 2021*<\/p>\n<p><strong>END DATE:<\/strong>\u00a0August 13, 2021*<\/p>\n<p>*Position start and end date may vary by up to two weeks as determined by 2021 weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific Responsibilities of Seed Crew Leader:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supervise and work alongside one to two seed crew technicians<\/li>\n<li>Plan and conduct fieldwork: monitor phenology of target species, collect botanical voucher specimens, assess seed quality and collect native seeds, record site data, document activities, and prepare seed for shipping<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate closely with IAE Plant Materials team in Corvallis to meet collection targets<\/li>\n<li>Communicate with land managers or partners to facilitate access to collection sites; represent IAE in a professional manner<\/li>\n<li>Manage data and ensure quality control<\/li>\n<li>Prioritize safety; adhere to check-in\/check-out procedures and communications via cell phone or SPOT device to ensure crew safety<\/li>\n<li>Plan overnight camping for field work<\/li>\n<li>Flexibility to work collaboratively on related IAE projects in the same geographic area on an as needed basis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Minimum Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 or more seasons of field ecology experience, with preference given to those with skills in seed collection, particularly the SOS protocol, and identifying plants of the Intermountain West<\/li>\n<li>Plant identification skills and experience using technical keys and collecting plant vouchers<\/li>\n<li>Excellent communication skills and experience working on a team<\/li>\n<li>Leadership experience<\/li>\n<li>Highly organized and able to manage complex objectives and take initiative<\/li>\n<li>Outgoing, energetic, and flexible<\/li>\n<li>Data management experience; experience with Excel<\/li>\n<li>Experience using GPS mapping applications<\/li>\n<li>Must have a valid driver&#8217;s license and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle on rugged, off-highway gravel or dirt roads<\/li>\n<li>Comfortable in a backcountry setting: ability to work long hours in adverse weather conditions while maintaining attention to the task and crew safety<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work in bent-over, kneeling, or standing positions for significant periods of time<\/li>\n<li>Ability to lift at least 40 lbs. and hike up to 6 miles per day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Preferred Skills:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Aid certification<\/li>\n<li>Experience using ArcGIS software<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"how-apply-header\">HOW TO APPLY<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Please visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/appliedeco.org\/get-involved\/jobs\/\">https:\/\/appliedeco.org\/get-involved\/jobs\/<\/a>\u00a0for job postings and application details!
