INTRODUCTION:<\/strong><\/p>\nWe seek a capable, enthusiastic person who is committed to conservation in Hawai\u2018i to assist with community outreach for the Hawai\u2018i Birds, Not Mosquitoes Program. This program is evaluating the\u00a0possible\u00a0use of the Incompatible Insect Technique to suppress mosquito populations at a landscape-scale in Hawai\u2018i. The program\u2019s goal is to advance this technology to protect Hawai\u2018i\u2019s native forest birds from avian malaria.\u00a0The Outreach Associate will work with representatives from a\u00a0broad coalition of state, federal, and private\/NGO entities\u00a0including\u00a0communications specialists from across the state, as well as the American Bird Conservancy\u2019s Project Coordinator and Hawai\u2018i Program Director. Work will include\u00a0conducting\u00a0virtual and in-person\u00a0outreach\u00a0and education activities\u00a0and engagement activities involving the public,\u00a0internal and external\u00a0stakeholders,\u00a0elected officialsand others. The Outreach Associate will work closely with the Project Coordinator to facilitate meetings, communications, and activities for the project.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
MAJOR DUTIES:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Assist with implementation of the project\u2019s community engagement strategy.<\/li>\n
- Develop, schedule, and conduct presentations, workshops, and events to scientific and non-scientific groups, including key stakeholders, community members, elected officials, and the general public.<\/li>\n
- Assist with producing outreach and community engagement materials, press releases, and media (e.g., web pages, brochures,\u00a0and\u00a0infographics).<\/li>\n
- Assist with maintaining positive relationships among state, federal, and private\/NGO steering committee partners to facilitate inter-agency agreement on, and support for, communications strategies and activities.<\/li>\n
- Assist and support Project Coordinator and Program Director in advancing goals and objectives of steering committee.<\/li>\n
- Assist Project Coordinator with meeting organization, schedules, agendas, and minutes; maintain project calendar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Skilled at interacting with a wide diversity of stakeholders including community members, state and federal agency staff, elected officials, and others.<\/li>\n
- Ability to understand complex, and potentially controversial technical issues, and successfully translate them into accessible and engaging presentations and conversations is critical.<\/li>\n
- Ability to\u00a0capture and\u00a0successfully communicate\u00a0local communities\u2019 concerns to the steering committee so these issues can be included in the overall process.<\/li>\n
- Enthusiastic about achieving project goals and finding solutions to obstacles, while developing positive relationships with diverse stakeholders and partners.<\/li>\n
- college degree or sufficient experience in a related outreach or communications field.<\/li>\n
- willing and able to travel frequently among islands, including occasional overnight stays and some weekends.<\/li>\n
- Ability to effectively communicate (written and orally) with both scientific and non-scientific audiences, both in person and through use of web sites, social media, and other online forums.<\/li>\n
- Understanding and experience with Hawaiian culture, history, institutions, and ecology.<\/li>\n
- Ability to quickly learn and synthesize complicated scientific concepts into understandable presentations for different audiences.<\/li>\n
- Self-motivation, ability to work independently and also as a productive, positive member of a team.<\/li>\n
- Experience in\u00a0community engagement and public outreach, including public speaking<\/li>\n
- Conflict resolution\u00a0skills.<\/li>\n
