The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 21 is seeking a Political and Legislative Organizer. The Political and Legislative Organizer position is a full-time position. We are a large union with a robust political program and we are looking for applicants to help us further our mission of building a powerful union that fights for economic, political and social justice in our work places and communities.<\/h5>\n
This position is based in Seattle, WA. Our organization will follow all guidelines put forth by Public Health officials and is working remotely until further notice.<\/em><\/p>\nResponsibilities include, but are not limited to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Helping to research, analyze, and advocate for policy changes that benefit our members and workers in our industries, with a focus on removing barriers to workers forming a union in their work places.<\/li>\n
- Representing the union in specific political and advocacy coalitions and tables, as well as in meetings with elected officials.<\/li>\n
- Coordinating member and staff engagement in the political and legislative process, including in-district lobbying and lobby days, electoral and advocacy campaign events, and member testimony.<\/li>\n
- Develop member leadership and participation in our political program through trainings, one-on-one member development, including further development of our Political Action Team, our Healthcare Advisory Board and our Executive Board.<\/li>\n
- Support ABC (International PAC) fundraising and our voter registration program.<\/li>\n
- Coordinating the union\u2019s candidate interview and endorsement process, including tracking candidate endorsements and contributions, recruiting members to participate in our endorsement process, coordinating candidate forums.<\/li>\n
- Help design and implement internal electoral program including member outreach, worksite voter ID program, and coordinating with our communications department on both member and external engagement.<\/li>\n
- Coordinating elected official engagement in contract campaigns and growth efforts.<\/li>\n
- Work on campaigns throughout the organization including growth, bargaining and internal member mobilization.<\/li>\n
- Working with member lists and managing worksite contacts and voter contacts including some data entry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well with a team in sometimes stressful situations while maintaining a sense of humor, perspective, and always assuming the best in your coworkers.<\/li>\n
- Excitement to work with our membership and engage them in the political work of our union.<\/li>\n
- Commitment to the UFCW 21 mission and interest in our entire organization, not just the political work.<\/li>\n
- Strong speaking, writing, research and listening skills.<\/li>\n
- Has initiative and can be self-directed to build and manage a plan to complete an objective.<\/li>\n
- Basic computer literacy required; knowledge of the VAN system and Excel is a plus.\u00a0Willingness and ability to learn our internal data systems is required.<\/li>\n
- Willingness to work irregular hours as the work requires, including occasional evenings and weekends.<\/li>\n
- Commitment to evaluating work through racial and gender equity lens and ability to mobilize womxn, people of color, and other marginalized groups.<\/li>\n
- Some travel within Washington State and occasionally outside of the state is required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
