Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n The\u00a0Prineville Wildlife Biologist will assist in operational activities of wildlife programs including, but not limited to, inventory, census and other biological data collection of wildlife species for management and research programs, handling wildlife damage complaints through evaluation and implementation of supervised program policies, identification of quality and quantity of wildlife habitats and implementing measures to improve or protect those habitats.<\/p>\n What you will do:<\/b><\/u><\/p>\n \u2022 Conduct district big game, waterfowl, upland bird and non-game census, composition, production and monitoring ground and aerial surveys using ODFW protocol and forms. Properly identify sex, age and species of big game, upland game, waterfowl and non-game wildlife. Collect teeth, reproductive tracts and other tissue samples consistent with ODFW safety and collection protocols as assigned.<\/p>\n \u2022 Capture wildlife for relocation and rehabilitation. Follow ODFW capture and handling procedures and respond as necessary to capture large and small wildlife, including birds, mammals and reptiles. May involve sick, injured or dangerous wildlife, which may require the use of a firearm to euthanize the animal. Transport captured animals as necessary. Arrange for rehabilitation, release or euthanasia depending on situation or as directed.<\/p>\n \u2022 Conduct hunting season surveys to determine hunting pressure and satisfaction, harvest rates and compliance. Contact hunters and check camps. Check licenses and tags and record harvest information. Check for compliance and look for violations during hunts and in travel management areas. If violations are suspected or encountered, coordinate with Oregon State Police (OSP) and record violation information.<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Promptly respond to wildlife damage complaints. Work with landowners\u00a0and consult with district biologist to develop and implement damage strategy. Inventory and maintain hazing and fencing supplies. Update and maintain district wildlife damage database. Assist with issuing tags to landowners experiencing crop damage.<\/p>\n \u2022 Identify opportunities for habitat projects\u00a0on public and\/or private lands. Work with landowners, conservation\u00a0organizations,<\/span> public agencies and other ODFW staff to develop, plan and implement habitat projects.\u00a0Work\u00a0with<\/span> volunteers and other staff to maintain and repair existing developments (fencing, guzzlers, cisterns, nest\u00a0boxes and plantings). Monitor condition of facility and conduct needed routine maintenance and upkeep of the office, shop, equipment and tools kept at Prineville.\u00a0Represent<\/span> ODFW and work with Bureau of Reclamation and Oregon Parks and Recreation Department to cooperatively manage wildlife management areas and improvements.<\/p>\n \u2022 Receive and respond to requests and concerns from the public. Provide information regarding wildlife management, habitat improvement and landowner assistance programs to the public and media as directed. Provide presentations to civic and special interest groups, schools and agencies on wildlife management and habitat improvement.<\/p>\n Working Conditions<\/b><\/p>\n \u2022 Work outdoors 60% of the time, sometimes during inclement weather and in rugged terrain.<\/p>\n \u2022 Includes some cross-country foot travel, operation of a motor boat over local reservoirs, ATV operation, passenger in aircraft and travel by 4WD vehicles on surfaced and unimproved roads. Field work commonly includes equipment operation and lifting materials and tools.<\/p>\n \u2022 A well-developed sense of diplomacy is required. Frequent dealings with the public, local residents, landowners and other agency personnel. Must be able to communicate with a variety of personalities in a professional manner.<\/p>\n \u2022 Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.<\/p>\n \u2022 This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board.
