We are seeking applicants with excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and the use of sound judgement.<br \/>\nThe Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) currently operates 87 hatchery facilities, the majority dedicated to producing salmon and\/or steelhead. There are also 51 tribal hatcheries and 12 federal hatcheries that produce salmon and steelhead for harvest.\u00a0\u00a0 Hatcheries have operated in Washington State for more than a century, beginning with a facility on the Kalama River in 1895.<\/p>\n<p>You love Washington\u2019s beautiful outdoors you care about their resources and you are willing to do the hard work it takes to care for them.<\/p>\n<p>Coulter Creek receives unfed fall chinook fry from the Minter Creek hatchery and rears them to be shipped and then acclimated in the Deschutes River.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/dd>\n<dt>Duties<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><strong>KEY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feeds fish calculated daily ration.<\/li>\n<li>Monitors fish behavior and health.<\/li>\n<li>Monitors egg and fish production.<\/li>\n<li>Administers therapeutants, calculates and administers drugs as prescribed.<\/li>\n<li>Identifies, sorts and samples for spawning and adult distribution.<\/li>\n<li>Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.<\/li>\n<li>Identifies marked adults and collects tags\/marks for bio sampling.<\/li>\n<li>Records data and can identify multiple marks by sight, UV lights or mechanical devices.<\/li>\n<li>Collects fish tissue and fluid samples for Fish Health Specialists without contaminating samples.<\/li>\n<li>Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.<\/li>\n<li>Loads fish for transport using a variety of methods such as: electric fish pump, brail and crane.<\/li>\n<li>Loads truck according to safe hauling densities, utilizes proper oxygen levels and monitors fish during transport.<\/li>\n<li>Monitors destination lake temperature, depths, pathway to lake, access during low water events, and direct planting of trout into lakes and tempers the water in the tank if necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Contact Fish Health Specialist when fish are showing signs of disease or illness and works closely with them in treating and diagnosing illness.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrates proficiency with computerized forms and software in order to perform various aspects of hatchery work, including data entry, recordkeeping, reporting (both within and external).<\/li>\n<li>Performs water quality analysis and discharge monitoring reports (DMR) as required by the Department of Ecology.<\/li>\n<li>Performs standby which requires responds to alarms determining and taking appropriate action to preserve facility program, tests alarms and reports alarm failures to agency personnel.<\/li>\n<li>Actively identifies safety hazards and acts or recommends remedies as appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>Store and use tools and equipment properly.<\/li>\n<li>Conducts organized tours.<\/li>\n<li>Responds to questions from visitors to the facility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Management may determine it is necessary to assign it in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The position entails feeding fish, cleaning ponds, loading marking\/tagging trailers, loading of fish transportation trucks, grounds maintenance and various hatchery projects and upkeep.<\/li>\n<li>This requires a lot of standing in water for long periods of time for seining, vacuuming and loading trailers and trucks.<\/li>\n<li>Performs strenuous physical activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Schedule:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work week is<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Monday \u2013 Friday, 8:00 a.m. \u2013 5:00 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>The work hours can vary greatly at different times of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Standby:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is no agency housing available to facilitate the standby requirement.<\/li>\n<li>The employee is responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day.<\/li>\n<li>While on standby this position will work ten days on and 4 days off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Travel:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Travel may be required in order to accomplish agency goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tools and Equipment: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Perform mechanical tasks using power and hand tools.<\/li>\n<li>Employee will work with hand and power tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding machines, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments, adult fish pumps, adult fish counters, CWT identification equipment, pressure washers, diesel generators, small engine, transport trucks, a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 and successful completion of agency supervised training program.\u00a0<strong><u>OR<\/u>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Associate degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field and one year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery,\u00a0<strong><u>OR<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Three years of education towards a bachelor\u2019s degree in fisheries or closely allied field and one year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery,\u00a0<strong><u>OR<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school and one year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.\u00a0<strong><u>OR<\/u><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Three years of experience performing a variety of fish
