\nWe are seeking three (3) highly motivated and experienced Scientific Technicians to work alongside a diverse team promoting the conservation of Washington State\u2019s salmonid population.\u00a0 This opportunity is located in Thurston County.<\/p>\n

There are three (3) 3.5 to 4-months non-permanent Scientific Technician 2\u2019s positions available in Region 6. \u00a0The duty station for these positions is located at 3939 Cleveland AVe., SE, Tumwater, WA.\u00a0 See anticipated start dates below.\n<\/div>\n
4 months \u2013 September 16, 2020 \u2013 January 11, 2021
\n3.5 months \u2013 October 1, 2020 \u2013 January 15, 2021
\n3.5 months \u2013 October 16, 2020 \u2013 February 1, 2021<\/div>\n
\nThese positions will be responsible for conducting stream surveys, collect hatchery and wild chinook, coho, chum, pink, sockeye, steelhead & lamprey spawning survey data (redd accounting and carcass sampling, in stream sampling) in South Puget Sound watersheds and in Hood Canal.\u00a0 These data sets help determine hatchery vs wild salmonid escapement estimates, run reconstruction, and forecasts used in fisheries management for both non-tribal sport and tribal commercial gillnet fisheries.\u00a0 Stream survey collection includes live\/dead counts.<\/div>\n

DutiesEnumerate and monitor hatchery and wild salmon\/steelhead redds plus live\/dead fish counts with \u201cindex\u201d reaches surveyed 7-14 days.<\/b>
\nTasks include:<\/b>
\nFish identification
\nNew redds are numbered with flagging
\nRecord data onto field cards
\nCheck data for error conditions and summarized.
\nSurveys conducted on foot, raft, pontoon boat, and\/or jet sled during all weather conditions and difficult terrain.
\nBiological data (scales, fin marks, coded wire tag, otoliths, DNA) collected on dead fish.\u00a0 Survey included enumerating Pacific and Brook lamprey visible redds and live\/dead counts<\/p>\n

Driving to and from surveyed reaches on both highway and off-road conditions<\/b>
\nTasks include:<\/b>
\nIncludes gaining access onto private properties, map reading, GPS coordinates, radio operations, vehicle maintenance and repairs.<\/b><\/p>\n

Enumerate and monitor salmon\/steelhead redds plus live\/dead fish counts with \u201cSupplemental\u201d type surveys during peak spawning.\u00a0 Visible redd and fish counts are recorded on field cards<\/b>
\nTasks include:<\/b>
\nData is error checked and summarized.\u00a0 Surveys conducted by foot, raft, drift boat, and or jet sled. Timing of surveys based upon \u201cIndex\u201d type vis\/cum. relationships. Biological data (scales, fin marks, coded wire tag) collected on dead fish.<\/p>\n

\nTasks include:<\/b>
\nTracking weather and stream flows<\/u>, data organization and error checking.<\/p>\n

Misc. duties.<\/b>
\nTasks include:<\/b>
\nIncluding\u00a0gear\/equipment\/vehicle maintenance and repairs<\/u>, sampling lowland trout lakes, documenting habitat alterations within surveyed areas.\u00a0 \u00a0Hatchery sampling, mainly Chinook, lengths, scales, check for CWT.
\nWorking conditions<\/p>\n

Work hours\u00a0<\/strong><\/u>are generally 40 hours per week. Workdays and hours are determined by weather, stream flows and visibility, and degree of spawning activity.\u00a0 A flexible hourly and daily work schedule is therefore needed to perform the assigned tasks. Weekends and holidays are included as potential workdays.
\nNeed to have good positive communication skills. Good public relation skills a plus.\u00a0\u00a0Must work well independently in both office and field environments.\u00a0\u00a0 Maintains accurate field notes. Follow instructions and established protocols and procedures to conduct salmonid \/lamprey redd counts.\u00a0 Must be able to work well in teams of at least 2 survey staff\u2026 Must work well independently in both office and field environments.\u00a0\u00a0The ability to be able to swim is highly recommended.<\/p>\n

Working environment\u00a0<\/strong><\/u>– Usually surveys alone or at times with other technicians or biologists in a wide variety of terrain and stream substrate conditions. Fieldwork is often done in inclement weather within varying stream flow and visibility conditions. Field work can be strenuous while walking in or along streams with slick boulders, crawling over logjams, wading across riffles with moderate \u2013 fast current or maneuvering watercraft listed above. Should be able to lift and maneuver equipment upwards to or greater than 40 pounds.\u00a0 Operate a raft, drift boat, pontoon boats, or jet-pump equipped sled in a wide range of stream flows, stream viewing conditions, and obstacles. General raingear, waders, wading shoes raincoat, WDFW hat.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You must have a valid unrestricted driver\u2019s license.<\/b><\/p>\n

NOTE:<\/b>\u00a0Staff will be required to follow all WDFW policies and procedures required for employment with WDFW. Staff will be required to follow Standard Operating Procedures associated with COVID-19 precautions including the requirement to wear face coverings during office, lab, warehouse and field activities.<\/p>\n

QualificationsGraduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1
\nOR
\nGraduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of laboratory of field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist or zoologist.<\/p>\n

NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong>College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIn-the-field identification of live and dead salmonids
\nIdentifies, interpret, and monitor salmonid\/lamprey spawning activity by species.
\nBasic safe operation of rafts and boats in moving waters a definite plus.
\nAbility to clearly and concisely fill out field data forms.
\nBasic computer data entry skills.
\nThe ability to follow oral and written instructions
\nStrong communication skills and the ability to interact with the general public are necessary.
\nA safe and defensive driver while operating State vehicles.
