interests!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The Habitat Program within the Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking to fill a Non-Permanent Fish &amp; Wildlife Biologist 2 position.<\/b>\n<\/div>\n<div><b><i>The Fish &amp; Wildlife Biologist 2<\/i><\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b>position\u00a0contributes to the successful implementation of contract and program work within the Aquatic Research Section.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Our ideal candidate<\/i><\/b>\u00a0is experienced in developing and presenting biological information to diverse groups of people\u00a0and has excellent facilitation, negotiation and written communication skills.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Strong candidates<\/i><\/b>\u00a0are analytical, result-oriented and are passionate about assessing the needs and establishing resolutions related to resource management.<\/div>\n<p>Duties<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<b>K<\/b><b>EY DUTIES AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Characterize, create and restore habitats for a variety of species.<\/li>\n<li>Determine behavior, abundances, distribution, survival, mortality and\/or growth of wildlife.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to research projects with Federal, State, local governments and private and other organizations.<\/li>\n<li>Capture and handle live animals &#8211; collect tissue for the purpose of genetic analysis, obtain measurements and weight (predominantly amphibians).<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle and equipment acquisition\/maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>Site access, map development and scheduling.<\/li>\n<li>Manage data in databases and summarize work completed and\/or remaining.<\/li>\n<li>Provide data quality control and ensure complete, consistent and accurate data.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate and analyze data and develop data summaries to address research questions.<\/li>\n<li>Write reports or summaries and draft technical report sections.<\/li>\n<li>Formulate educated conclusions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Work Setting, including hazards:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The working environment is a composite of office and field work.\u00a0 Employees are expected to work independently and in teams.<\/li>\n<li>Field work includes hiking off-trail through dense vegetation, up and down steep slopes and streams, in and around waterbodies.\u00a0 This includes wading, boating and snorkeling.<\/li>\n<li>Must be comfortable navigating over land and through aquatic systems through a variety of landscapes that include managed landscapes, agricultural and timber stands ranging from recent clear-cut to mature forests.\u00a0 This may require time spent crawling through dense understory and woody debris.<\/li>\n<li>While in the field employees may be required to carry a heavy pack (&lt; 40 pounds) and haul awkward equipment such as rebar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Schedule:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 days per week &#8211; 10 hours per day, Monday through Thursday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Travel Requirements:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Travel to and from study sites is required.<\/li>\n<li>Camping overnight at sites near study sites is infrequent, 1 &#8211;\u00a03 nights some weeks during the field season (typically March \u2013 October).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tools and Equipment:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Driving 4WD trucks and SUVs on logging roads located in Federal, State, and Private forestlands.<\/li>\n<li>Rubber boots, caulked boots and\/or wading boots to navigate off trail and through aquatic systems.<\/li>\n<li>Handheld computer or other device to collect field data and enter it into menu driven data sheets located on the PDA.<\/li>\n<li>GPS to navigate and collect data.<\/li>\n<li>Handheld tools to cut through woody debris.<\/li>\n<li>Data loggers to collect temperature and water quality information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Customer Interactions:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Landowners or other users of public and\/or private lands when on or in route to study sites.<\/li>\n<li>Responsible for maintaining positive and productive relationships with members of the general public and landowners on whose lands study sites are located.<\/li>\n<li>Interactions must be in a respectful manner, informing them of their reasons for their presence and providing documentation of permission to access study sites through the display of access permits if requested.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Qualifications<b><i>Preference will be given to candidates who have the following REQUIRED education, experiences and competencies:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Education:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>A Bachelor\u2019s degree from an accredited college or university in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or related field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Professional:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>One year of professional experience in fish\/ wildlife\/ habitat management or research.\u00a0 (A Master\u2019s degree in the applicable science will substitute for one year of the required experience.\u00a0 A Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for two years of the required experience).<\/li>\n<li>Ability to perform a variety of outdoor work in inclement weather, participate in conferences, develop presentations and present findings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Research and Analytical Skills:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to use standard laboratory and field equipment, apply standard statistical techniques in analysis of research data, reason logically, draw valid conclusions, make appropriate recommendations, collect data according to established protocols and train and supervise field staff in appropriate field collection techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to apply research techniques to a project, manage and manipulate data in large databases.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of principles and procedures of biological research, standard laboratory and field methods, statistical techniques, population measurement techniques, fish, wildlife, and habitat ecology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Communication:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to communicate directly and effectively and convey ideas and facts orally and in writing to study partners, the public and federal, state and county officials.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to partner with field crew staff, supervisors and collaborators to identify needs and prioritize tasks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Relationship-Building:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li>Ability to develop positive, productive, respectful working relationships with coworkers and experience in the following PREFERRED competencies:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Three years professional experience conducting field research, preferably in the Pacific Northwest.<\/li>\n<li>Familiarity with aquatic freshwater systems in the Pacific Northwest and standard aquatic sampling techniques.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with native stream-associated amphibians and collecting tissue samples for the purpose of genetic analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Experience with statistical programs for data analysis, including R.<\/li>\n<li>Proven success writing and revising technical and professional
