On the ground timber sale review.<br \/>\nDetermine sampling and layout methods and conduct field cruise.\u00a0 Determine sorts, grades, products, defect, species, tree heights\/diameters, and probable breakage to estimate the gross and net volume per assigned cruise area.\u00a0 Must be able to meet Region and DNR cruising standards.\u00a0 Fluent use of agency software such as Microsoft Word and Excel, ArcGIS, SuperAce, TRIS and other timber cruising and data processing programs to analyze data and produce accurate maps, narratives, reports, findings and recommendations.<br \/>\nWhile cruising timber sales, review and make observations\/recommendations about cutting and silvicultural prescriptions, soils, ground features, yarding limitations, sale area boundaries, road locations, wildlife habitat, sensitive features and other environmental issues.\u00a0 Also record specific stand information such as the presence of specialty products or unusual stand features.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>Who are we looking for?<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The right candidate has:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic knowledge of theory, policy, principles and practices of the forestry profession as applied to Northwestern United States.<\/li>\n<li>A thorough knowledge of cruising and forest mensuration techniques including measurement and marketability by species, grade and defect.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to use specialized cruising equipment and various software applications.<\/li>\n<li>A working knowledge of the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA); Sustainable Forest Calculation and Implementation Plan; Forest Practices Rules; and Forestry Handbook.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to act as a consultant on cruising\/mensuration issues including conducting small group training on forest measurement.<\/li>\n<li>Basic knowledge of timber sale layout including the boundary\/road location and logging systems.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of database structures and computer applications for processing timber cruise information.<\/li>\n<li>Excellent written and oral communication skills.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.<\/li>\n<li>The incumbent in this position is required to travel.<\/li>\n<li>Must have a valid driver\u2019s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.\u00a0 Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and\/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Desirable Qualifications:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bachelor of Science degree in forestry or forest engineering or other natural resource field.<\/li>\n<li>One year of field experience in timber sale layout, contract compliance, forest cruising and\/or forest practices regulation.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of timber sale appraisal methods.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to communicate complex issues orally and in writing to a variety of audiences.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of applicable labor and union contracts.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of log scaling methods, applications and practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><u>The Location<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>One of the world&#8217;s most scenic places, Washington State offers breathtaking discoveries for people who love natural beauty and outdoor recreation, from the Pacific Coast shores to the rugged Cascade Mountains to the rolling hills of the\u00a0Palouse.
